Subject: Iowa State Red Helmet, 1983-1984

Yes, Iowa State did use an inverted helmet color in 1983 and 1984. The helmet was used to recognize player performance. Once awarded the red helmet which replaced the standard yellow issue, that player wore the alternate helmet for the balance of the season. I was fortunate to be honored with the first alternate colored helmet.

There are some comments that players became a target or more easily identified with the alternate helmet. I don't believ that to be the case. Just ask the 1983 Husker defense if the red helmet helped them more easily find Tracy Henderson as he caught 16 pases for over 200 yards while sporting the red helmet.

Cool site. Thanks! CM
