It was an article a couple of years ago that several Louisiana schools are in trouble financially. Both New Orleans and Tulane have been struggling ever since hurricane Kathrina. Grambling State be merging as one school as La. Tech takes over. McNeese State, Nicholls State, LSU-Shreveport, Tulane, SE La. State and others could be merging. It is something that Georgia and Texas have been doing recently.

I think UAB may have already done so.
