Subject: Temple has used eight different helmet designs in eight games

I think I predicted about a year ago that some team would soon use a different helmet design in each game one year - perhaps Temple will be the first to do so. They've used a different design in each game this year!

But - I'm so far behind in updating the site that there may be others, also. I haven't really yet studied Oregon, Tulsa, Wyoming, Louisiana-Lafayette, and many others...working through American Athletic Conference at the moment.

First off, I want to say you are doing a great job with the site. Now, I may be wrong, but isn't the helmet southern Methodist is using now identical to the helmet first used in 1976?

It's basically the same, close enough that I presently have the same helmet image up for both periods. To be precise the stripes on the current helmet may be slightly narrower, particularly the blue outer stripes.

So, now any permutation of shiny and flat matte shells, white/burgundy helmet shells (there's one with a subliminated design), white/burgundy facemasks, presence/absence of stripes, and either the academic "T" or "TEMPLE" are fair game now? (I'm assuming even the owl head may even show up, even though it's not likely considering their record while wearing them...)

And then there's this "Acres of Diamonds" gala logo used against Army on 10/19 (I think it's reported before) for an exhibition to promote their lung center (so that's definitely a one-time-use event).
I would have thought that if there are 13 different helmet designs in one year, Oregon would be the one do it, but this is really pushing the limits for us helmet enthusiasts.

I know for sure that Oregon has repeated a design or two before this year, but that's not saying much. Thanks to Mac, I'm pretty sure that the most complete catalogue of which helmet was used when is within each weekly thread.

I seem to remember Virginia Tech came pretty close to doing that one year.

From the sixth page of archives, this seems like the closest that the Hokies had done.

Also, Mr. Arey, if I'm not mistaken, you're missing a letter "E" designation for Rutgers.

They have?

>They have?

(I'm assuming "They" refers to Temple. If it's Virginia Tech, the Hokies haven't been as crazy with alternate helmets.)

Anyway, looking through the various weekly threads (thanks again Mac), here they are:

8/31 @ Notre Dame: Subliminated white shell, white facemask, T (this one is already on the site)
9/7 vs. Houston: http://owlsports.com/galleries/?gallery=658 Matte cherry shell, cherry facemask, TEMPLE
9/14 vs. Fordham: http://www.owlsports.com/galleries/?gallery=662 Subliminated white shell, cherry facemask, T
9/21: bye week.
9/28 @ Idaho: Matte cherry shell, white facemask, T (the 2011 helmet with a matte finish) (Can't find a picture of this one)
10/5 vs. Louisville: http://www.owlsports.com/galleries/?gallery=672 Subliminated white shell, black facemask, T
10/11 @ Cincinnati (Friday): http://www.owlsports.com/galleries/?gallery=672 Matte cherry shell, white facemask, Liberty Bell on left side
10/19 vs. Army: "Acres of Diamonds" helmet as seen above (matte cherry, cherry facemask, AOD logo).
10/26 @ Southern Methodist: http://www.owlsports.com/galleries/?gallery=672 Matte cherry shell, cherry facemask, T
11/2 @ Rutgers: http://www.scarletknights.com/sspro/album.asp?id=653 Aww, a duplicate. ;) It's the same helmet as the game against Louisiville above.

11/9 is another bye week. There's only three games left (11/16 vs. Central Florida, 11/23 vs. Connecticut, 11/30 @ Memphis).

So what can we deduce from this? A 2013 Temple helmet will have no stripes, and they choose between a cherry or subliminated white shell. The shell will always be matte finish now. The facemasks can only be white, cherry, or black. Only T and TEMPLE are in use barring the two special logos, and the owl head is not likely going to appear (or any sort of wing pattern). But let's take these "rules" lightly for the creation of another new Temple helmet.
