Motherlode.

Carthage's design "?-2005" began at least by 1988. There is not 1988 yearbook listed, so the change either happened in 1987 or 1988.

The 1986 design is shown (in color) on page 24 of the 1987 yearbook.

I haven't been through all of them yet but it's a nice collection that could help fill some gaps.

Keeping with the theme of this thread, here is the online edition of the 1991 Memphis Tigers yearbook. Charles, you state that there is a gap in the records for Memphis in 1991. On pages 24-25 (in the book; 27-28 according to the site), there is a shot of a sophomore kicker, meaning the picture would have to have come from 1990 (I assume). Between the holder in that picture and the group shot on the next page, I think you can see a decent idea of the 1990 helmet appearing similar to the 1991 one.
