Subject: Brandon Cotton? From Oakland Press

The Oakland University men's basketball team could be in the running for a highly sought-after transfer.

Sources close to the situation have said that former Michigan State University freshman Brandon Cotton has been contacted by OU representatives and that he's considering playing for the Golden Grizzlies.

OU coach Greg Kampe declined comment on the situation.

One source said Cotton is weighing all of his options, which also include the University of Detroit and several out-of-state programs.

The McDonald's All-American from Detroit St. Martin DePorres High School is reported to be very confused since he officially left the Spartans team last week.

One source said there is currently no time frame in which Cotton plans to make a decision.

Those close to Cotton, however, have indicated that it would be in his best interest to stay in Michigan and that OU would be a good fit for him.

Cotton was recruited to be MSU's long-term solution to its point guard problem, but things didn't work out as planned.

The 18-year-old suffered a stress fracture in his foot that kept him sidelined for almost a month. After he returned, he complained to MSU coach Tom Izzo about his playing time.

Cotton has also reportedly been bothered by personal problems, which include the deaths of two family members.

Cotton was told by MSU officials that he will be allowed to keep his scholarship for the remainder of the school year to continue taking classes.

It's in Cotton's best interest to stay at MSU in order to meet NCAA first-year academic eligibility requirements.

Cotton averaged 5.3 minutes, 1.0 assists and 1.0 points in just three games for the Spartans.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Cotton was not recruited by OU out of high school because of his attention from top Division I programs.
