Rude 'Roos upend ORU

By MIKE BROWN World Sports Writer

UMKC's Watson erupts for 27 points while rubbing it in.
Missouri-Kansas City senior guard Michael Watson put on a show in his last scheduled game at the Mabee Center on Saturday night, but left Oral Roberts basketball fans with a sour taste.

The senior guard stomped on the painted Golden Eagle mascot at center court during a timeout, and taunted ORU fans after scoring 27 points to lead the Kangaroos to a 77-71 Mid-Continent Conference upset.

Watson and junior teammate Mike English taunted the crowd while the game was in progress and a fight nearly broke out as the teams met to shake hands after the game.

Watson tried to return courtside after going to the locker room and had words with Eric Harmon, the conference coordinator of officials, who tried to discourage Watson from going back out.

Afterward, Harmon warned head coach Rich Zvosec about Watson's behavior in a meeting outside the Kangaroos' dressing room.

Zvosec responded to reports of the taunting, saying, "I don't condone it and we will address it. There's a fine line between playing with your emotions and letting them run away with you."

Meanwhile, ORU (13-7, 6-3) was left to nurse more than its wounded pride after losing to the same team it had beaten 91-71 in Kansas City four weeks ago.

The Golden Eagles, winners of their first five conference games, fell out of the Mid-Con lead for the first time this season. IUPUI lost at Centenary and also fell to 6-3, but Valparaiso won in overtime at Western Illinois and took a half-game lead at 7-3.

Watson hit just 9-of-21 from the field, but was unstoppable when he needed to score. The scene was eerily similar to last year when he scored 54 in a double-overtime upset of the Golden Eagles.

UMKC (10-10, 5-4) won in Tulsa for the third time in four years. Watson, the school's second-leading career scorer, has 127 points in four Mabee Center games.

ORU freshman guard Ken Tutt scored a career- and game-high 28, but received little offensive help. Sophomore guard Jonathan Bluitt had 14 points and eight assists, but freshman forward Caleb Green was held to 10 points and 10 rebounds. Green's 10th double-double of the season didn't come close to matching his 33-point, 13-rebound performance in the earlier win at UMKC.

UMKC outrebounded the Eagles 38-29 and had 13 offensive boards. Three other Kangaroos scored in double figures. English and Brandon Temple had 14 each and Carlton Aaron added 13.

"They came in here and outworked us, inside and outside," Bluitt said.

ORU has lost three of its last four games after winning eight straight.

"I think we've lost some of our edge," said ORU coach Scott Sutton. "At the beginning of the season, we were hungry. We played with some toughness and intensity. Tonight, I don't think we did."

ORU led by six points in the first half and seven in the second, but UMKC erased each with an 8-0 run. The game was tied 11 times before Temple's third 3 with 3:06 left put the 'Roos ahead to stay.

CHICAGO STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS FLAT IN SECOND HALF IN
LOSS TO OAKLAND

ROCHESTER, Michigan – The Chicago State Men’s Basketball team fell flat
over the final 12 minutes of the game here Saturday as Oakland was able to collect a 77-60 Mid-Continent Conference win in front of a Fox Sports Net regional television audience.
CSU, who shot 42 percent in the second half and was outrebounded 34-23 for the game, was never able to retake the lead over the final 35 minutes of the game after jumping out to a 7-0 start.
“We got off to a good start, but we couldn’t sustain it,” CSU head coach Kevin Jones said. “But give credit to Oakland, they made the plays they needed to make to win the game.
“We have to continue to build from this and rebound from it.”
The Cougars scored the game’s first seven points, only to see Oakland run off nine straight in a little less than two minutes thanks to three three-point baskets. CSU’s final lead of the game came at 10-9 with 15:15 remaining the first half thanks to a lay-up by
senior forward Rubeen Perry.
Following the Cougars lead, Oakland would outscore CSU 27-12 over the next 13 minutes to take a 36-22 lead with a little under two minutes remaining in the half. The Cougars ended the half on a 7-2 run to push OU’s margin to nine points at 38-29 at
halftime.
In the second half, CSU began the half on a 14-7 run to climb back within 45-43 with 13:46 remaining in the game thanks to a lay-up by freshman center Jeleel Akindele.
Oakland, who went nearly seven minutes without a basket, went back up four at 47-43 thanks to a basket by Rawle Marshall at the 10:17 mark.
CSU was held scoreless for almost six minutes following Akindele’s lay-up, before Perry scored on a lay-up with 7:42 left in the game. During the drought, Oakland would outscore CSU, 7-0 and then would use an 8-4 run to push its lead to 13 at 60-47 with
5:42 remaining.
From that point, Oakland would eventually push its lead 20 points at 77-57 thanks to a basket by Curtis Gilmore with 39 seconds left in the game. CSU senior guard Geoff Richard’s basket and a free throw by junior Leon Petty ended the scoring and gave the Golden Grizzlies a 17-point cushion.
“They really took over the final 10 minutes of the game and didn’t let us get a lot of open looks,” Jones said. “Plus, we began to stand around on offense and make take some bad shots and not run our offense.”
For the game, Oakland shot 57 percent from the field, including 60 percent in the first half, while CSU shot 45 percent from the field, but only shot 42 percent after halftime. Oakland outscored CSU 28-22 in the paint and 16-11 on second chance points as the Golden Grizzlies collected 11 offensive rebounds. In addition, Oakland was 16-for-22 (73 percent) from the free throw line, while CSU was 7-for-13 (54 percent) for the game.
“They shot a lot of free throws, and we didn’t get many attempts, but that was because our offense didn’t go to the basket enough in the second half and that was a difference,” Jones said.
Perry led the Cougars with 15 points, while junior guard Tony Weeden added 14 points. Akindele and junior Craig Franklin each added eight points in the loss. Oakland was paced by Marshall, who scored 23 points and had eight rebounds, including scoring 15 points in the first half. Mike Helms, the Mid-Con’s fourth all-time leading scorer, added 21 points, including scoring 13 in the second half and scoring eight of the 21 from the free throw line and Cortney Scott chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds in the win.
With the loss, CSU falls to 6-16 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-Con, while Oakland improved to 9-13 overall and 3-7 in the league. CSU will look to rebound from its two game losing streak when it hosts Western Illinois in a 7 p.m. game Thursday night at the
Jacoby Dickens Center.
