Subject: Nice article on the Club Hockey Team

I think the next logical sport to add would be hockey. There are a number of good high school players in SE Michigan and Ontario. I think community interest would be at least as good as it is for basketball, and it would further the Universities goal of having a viable campus life connected with the community.

Now, the article also noted Jack Mehl's hesitation of moving the program to varsity status.

I am well aware of the fiscal problems facing higher education in Michigan, but I am curious what everyone thinks about Jack Mehl. He was hired to move D2 athletics to D1. He did an exceptional job of that, and I commend him for making the right decisions.

The question is, are we still in transition or have we arrived? I suggest that the foundation is strong and we need to push it to the next level. Is Jack Mehl the right person for the job?

From a fans perspective (not a true insider), I have a few questions.

1. Volleyball program-in D2, the head coach was a fulltime position, and we were competitive. Now, we can't keep a coach, and for years, we have been a sub .500 team. (probably my weakest point)

2.Internet/Radio broadcasts-we've talked about this fiasco many times.

3.Merchandise-straight up poor decision making. If (big if) the University lost a little money by licensing it out, they would more than make up for it in exposure. This issue is the most resolvable, because the University would not have to front any money.

4.Hockey-If you build it, they will come. I know, this takes a lot of money, but the mentality should not be "this is a long way off". It should be, this is what we are working towards.

So I ask you, can Jack Mehl lead athletics to the next level, or is he, and the University satisfied with the status quo?

Am I way off here?
