I believe either over here or on the VU board I started one of my sentences with "for all the good he does..." Obviously I recognize that he has done some good. I just think it is ultimately overtaken by the bad that he has done.

I have no problem with your hypothetical father-son talk, except that I still think there is a danger of not surviving such an experience with one's soul intact. I refer back to that movie "Full Metal Jacket" again where the main character comes out of his entire experience saying, "I'm in a world of ____ and I like it." I'm not even sold on the boot camp experience as preparation for war, precisely because of that. I see even less reason to go through it for the game of basketball.

However, your hypothetical warning is good. If someone can go through it without ending up that way, they very well may end up the better for it.
