Tigers top No. 13 Cal State Fullerton

The Record

The University of the Pacific baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, then hung on for 31/2 innings to surprise 13th-ranked Cal State Fullerton 8-7 in a Big West Conference game Saturday at Billy Hebert Field.

Down 7-5, the Tigers (18-14-1, 3-5 Big West) began their comeback in the fifth when Tim Gilhooly doubled to right-center field and advanced to third on Cory Lake's groundout to shortstop. Gilhooly scored on James Stanford's groundout to second.

Adam Alverson walked, and Mike Fitzgerald singled. Both runners advanced to second and third on the play. Nicholas Sekiya then singled home Alverson and Fitzgerald with the tying and go-ahead runs.

Pacific reliever Ryan Jurvakainen entered in the ninth with one out and a runner at second and induced a grounder for a double play.

Sekiya went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Pacific, and Gilhooly and Fitzgerald also went 2-for-4. For the Titans (22-12, 6-2), David Fischer homered, and Shane Costa and Geoff Comfort each had three hits.

The three-game series concludes at 11 a.m. today at Billy Hebert Field.
