Second half run powers Tigers

The Record

On a night when sharp-shooting guard Selena Ho was limited to only two points, the University of the Pacific women's basketball team found some other avenues to victory in Satuday night's 71-63 Big West Conference win over Idaho in Moscow.

The Tigers (17-10, 12-4) relied on the strong second half play of Gillain d'Hondt and Vanessa Dupont to secure at least a tie for second place with UC Riverside.

The Tigers will open Wednesday's conference tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face Idaho at noon Wednesday. The tied was broken by a coin flip.

Pacific -- which led only only 30-29 at halftime -- methodically pulled away in the second half. The Tigers biggest lead was 64-54 on a 3-point play by Corinne Wong with 4:45 remaining. The Tigers made only one 3-point field goal, but constantly broke the Vandals fullcourt press for easy layins.

Nancy Dinges led the Tigers with 17 points. The 6-foot-3 d'Hondt scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half while Dupont had a key block, rebound and a couple of baskets in the final minutes.

''I was real proud of our second half effort,'' said Pacific coach Sherri Murrell, whose team was outrebouned 21-14 in the first half. ''We came out of the blocks real strong.''

Despite scoring only two points, Ho passed out 10 assists. She came into the game averaging 15 points a game.

Keisha Moore paced the Vandals with 13 points.
