Subject: Tigers Defeat Korabel

Here is the story from the Record about the Tigers victory in their last exhibition game heading into their opener at Santa Clara.

Korabel no match for Pacific

The champagne of basketball teams is not Korabel.

In what amounted to little more than an intrasquad scrimmage, the University of the Pacific fought through a poor start and crushed Korabel, a Ukrainian club, 99-54 in an exhibition game on Saturday at Spanos Center.

"They were kind of slow," said Tigers senior guard David Bunts, who scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. "They couldn't match our intensity and that made us slow, too."

The Tigers, who will open the regular season Saturday Nov. 17 at Santa Clara, made only three of their first 17 shots and trailed 8-7 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Pacific went on a 20-1 run and never led by fewer than 17 points the remainder of the game.

"The competition wasn't very good," Pacific coach Bob Thomason said. "Santa Clara will be a tough opener for us."

The Tigers' highlights included a brilliant stretch of play in the second half led by senior center Mike Hahn and junior guard Demetrius Jackson, a 21-of-28 shooting effort from the foul line, a 59 percent shooting clip in the second half and only seven turnovers.

Jackson fed Hahn in the low post, then Hahn kicked it out to Jackson, who nailed a 3-pointer to make it 50-19 early in the second half. Hahn scored nine points on the Tigers ensuing five possessions and finished with a team-high 14 points. Jackson made some brilliant passes, including a no-look bounce pass in transition to Mike Preston, who laid it in and was fouled for a 3-point play. In the second half, Jackson saved the ball from going out of bounds at mid-court, flipped the ball over his shoulder to Jono Metzger-Jones, who streaked to the basket and was fouled as he attempted a layup. He made both free throws and finished with eight points.

Thomason was encouraged by Preston's play after he was benched early in the first half. Preston started at forward, missed his first two shots and was beaten badly on defense for a basket. Tim Johnson replaced him with 15:38 left in the first half. He returned, then scored seven points before halftime.

"Mike didn't start off that well at all," Thomason said. "But he played well his other two stints of the game. He bounced back and that was really good."

Jackson finished with 13 points, five assists, and only one turnover in 19 minutes, junior forward Eli Nolan grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and freshman forward Jasko Korajkic, who said Korabel reminded him of the European teams he's used to playing against, scored 10 points.

"I had fun (Friday),' said Korajkic, a native of Lithuania who hails from Bankeryd, Sweden. "I was confident and had fun. That's why I played smooth, I think."
