Subject: Maraker out for the season

UOP freshman is injured, will miss season

The Record

University of the Pacific freshman forward Christian Maraker of Varberg, Sweden, will sit out the remainder of the season because of a wrist injury.

Maraker will redshirt, meaning he can practice with the team and attend home games, but he can't compete. He'll be a freshman in terms of athletic eligibility next season. Maraker sustained the injury during practice Nov. 26 when he landed on his outstretched hand. He suffered a distal radio-ulnar dislocation to the left wrist. He appeared in four games and had nine points and four rebounds.

''It's unfortunate that Christian was injured and will not be able to continue to our successes on the court this season,'' Pacific coach Bob Thomason said. ''The injury happened at a time when he'll still be able to utilize his redshirt season and not lose a year of competition.''

I actually think this is a blessing in disguise. There is no way Maraker would have gotten serious minutes this year, due to the senior frontcourt. Let the guy redshirt and practice when he gets well, then he'll have four years to contribute to the team.
