Subject: Cast Iron Skillet Handle Potholder

While looking for other potholder crafts, I came across this good idea. It's the 4th post down, posted by "wired". Would be a good bazaar/craft show item, I think.

I know I sure could use one of those and will make me one. I just got some cast iron and love them but they do get hot. Thanks a bunch.

Linda, I don't have any cast iron cookware, but I just thought that was a good idea. I have a newer smooth stovetop and I'm not sure it would be OK to use on it. I've always had "regular" electric coil burners before this one and I don't want to ruin it by using a wrong pan on it or break it by dropping a cast iron skillet on it. I know I cannot use copper bottom pans and what I can use has to be flat on the bottom, not ridged.

I guess I could just use it in the oven, but those things are soooo heavy!

My Mom has the one that belonged to her Mom and it even went through my grandma's house fire that burned the house to the ground! Can you imagine how hot that fire was??? All they got out was themselves (grandma & grandpa)! Mom was looking through the rubble a few weeks after it happened to salvage anything she could when she found it. She took it home, cleaned it up and still uses it! Those things are tough!!!

I make these and they work great ! I only use the iron skillets. I just get the 2/1.00 pot holders and hand stitch them .I sell mine for 2.00 they go great .

I do like my skillets and have one of the old stoves with the coil burners. My DH wants to get a new stove as this one is the old olive green and is really ugly but it has 2 ovens and still works fine. I guess I can't get a new stove now as I want to use the cast iron and never thought of my skillets on the glass top. I have to remember to get a couple of the pot holders or make some. Boy to go through a fire I guess they are really made good.
