Darlene,
I have been working on a post for you about this for about an hour, but something just happened and it just deleted it before I told it to post, so I am not a "happy camper" right now!!! Grrrrrr!!!!
I will try again tomorrow.
Patty

Try googling your name, family names - aunts, uncles, grandparents...that type of thing

Thank you Karen, Mother of 4 and Patty, so sorry Patty after all of your work it got lost, know the feeling! I had never had an interest in this, but in older age feel maybe it would be nice to know medical background of the unknown if that is possible? I don't have a lot to go on and lost my Mom in 1996, she never had an interest in it, but left me a few names for a start.

First if it is possible search records at the county courthouse where your family relatives were born or died. Birth and death certificates reveal a lot of information.
Also census records can tell you more.
Interview any family relatives alive, as they can fill in a lot of names, places and dates.

If you have a family history center near you, use their resources. Here's a web site to tell you of their locations. Possibly there is one in your state.

OK, I'm gonna try this again...only shorter! LOL!!!

I have collected a lot of info on my family on both sides for a long time. I make copies of everything family tree related that I come across that someone else has done. If someone in my family needs family tree info, they come to me. LOL!!! I love this stuff!

If you know names and possibly cemeteries where they are buried, try http://www.findagrave.com/ I have found a lot of my relatives info here...some include pics of their gravestones.

Like Mother of 4 and Nancy mentioned, older relatives can help a lot with names, etc. Ask at family reunions.

I have also done like Mother of 4 mentioned, too, just do a search with their names and city/state, if known.

Maybe someone in your family has done an online family tree already. I found some of my family is on here http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/all-search.html and here http://www.genealogy.com/index_r.html

Another good search is through the Mormon church records http://www.ancestorhunt.com/mormon_church_records.htm I just checked on my Grandpa's info (he died in 1976) on this site and he IS listed. Neither of us are Mormon.

OK, maybe this will do for now. Hope this helps and good luck with your search!
Cross your fingers that I don't delete this before it posts! LOL!!!
Patty

I forgot to mention that on the Find-A-Grave site if you KNOW that a relative is buried at a specific cemetery, but there isn't a picture online of their gravestone that you can put in a request for a picture. Someone who is registered and close-by will go take a picture of it and post it for you on the site! Isn't that neat???!!!

Thank you Nancy K, and Patty!
I will be searching Ky. and Ohio, I do not have a lot to go on My father and young Bro. died in a trailer fire just 5 months before I was born, Father, Bro. and my Mom are buried here in Indiana, only 20 mins. away, butI would like to research his family, Mom left me a few names ~ the Grandparents lived in Ky. then Ohio my Father had Sisters in Ohio, figure they are up in age or gone?
Feel this can be as addicting as the computer! and as time consuming Ha!
Thanks again for your help!

Don't forget to question all the cousins. One of them might be into genealogy. Ask your parents cousins too if any of them are living. I find it is always the least likely person that will have the information for you. I have a membership to ancestry.com. Lots of family trees are posted there. As well as birth records, death records, obituaries, census reports, military service. Immigration records. If you can afford it, I would recommend a membership to ancestry.com

Forgot to mention that if you checked the family history center for a location near you, they have access to ancestry.com and you can use it for free at their center.
