Subject: Try it sometime

Hi,
Spent the day yesterday assisting judges at the local county fair. I got to see all the needlework up close and then helped with the baked goods. Brought home a beautiful hickory nut pie since they sell all but a sample of each item! If you ever get the chance, take the opportunity. It's a fun day of work.
Carol

Hi Carol: I've never heard of a Hickory Nut Pie. Please share a little info on some of the ingredients...would it be like a Pecan Pie? Thanks - Joann

We go to the county fair here in town and enjoy looking at everything. Course we go on the day of the demolition derby so have to be done by then as my SIL always has a car. I really like looking at all the pictures that people take and things they make. Don't go to the rides but have fun. The county fair and state fair have not started yet but will in a couple of days. What fun.

Hi, Joann,
I thought it was a pecan pie at first look but the ladies who had been working there all day said it was hickory nut. I almost passed it up because I often make pecan pie.
This is a family recipe. Last year's fair queen made it from her grandmother's recipe and her grandfather's hickory nuts. It has some ingredients different from pecan, don't know what they are but it is very good. The crust is wonderful.
Don't think there is much chance of getting the recipe. Maybe I could hold Grandma's glass pie plate hostage!
Our granddaughter's 4-H memory quilt won a blue ribbon. Have to take my turn in an exhibit hall on Thursday, will get a picture of it.
Carol

Hubby and I retired on Sunday from quite a few years with the draft horse show at our fair. He organized the halter and hitch shows and I announced and kept records at both. It was a long day of work and although we enjoyed it we needed to let it go. It will continue with some younger people, I'm sure.

Hi Carol,
Our Delaware State Fair ended a few weeks ago. I think maybe next year I'll try to see if there are any "Hickory Nut Pies" for sale. Just maybe we can solve the mystery and have that "Secret Old Recipe"..LOL.
How special for your Granddaughter - I know she's got to be so proud winning a Blue Ribbon.
Thanks for trying to share...Joann

Yes, I have been a judge at a couple of county fairs in Utah. You would be surprised as to what goes on behind the scenes. At the last one I helped judge, the extension agent went back & changed several of the awards to suit herself because she personally knew the people. And just not in the department I was over. I think the food, crafts, etc., should be judged on their own merits, but what do I know? *wink* That was my last fair to judge.

Another fair, a local followed me around telling me about each & every crafter, trying to sway my vote. That was not fun, either.

I believe most judges take their judging very seriously, working diligently to make their decisions. And I love to see all the handiwork. But I have not attended one here in years. Are there still crocheting, quilting, etc?
(((hugs)))

Hi, Jazz,
There was a good variety of handiwork but not much of any one thing. Our entries have fallen off recently since the fair requires pre-registration. We have always had to do that for our 4-H entries but the general public seems to find it too difficult. There used to be lots of quilts and I know we have quilters in the area. There were only 2 actual quilts and 1 wall hinging. There was a crewel embroidery entry, thought people didn't do that anymore. The veggie entries were down because of our late summer. Hope things turn around as people get used to the newer way of doing things.

Glad to hear that there are still some handiwork at the fairs. There used to be lots of quilts & crochet doilies, too. It seems to be that fewer & fewer young people are learning how to sew, knit, crochet, craft. I have a small craft group that meets in my home & the young married women do not know how to hand sew. *sigh* I was taught simple embroidery stitches at 7; machine sewing at 10; knitting at 11 & crochet at 16. I cannot imagine not having something for my hands to do, even now.

DH & grands went to our county fair & they said it was the best yet because they had a petting zoo & lots of animals. Others said the same thing about the fair being better this year. Hope that trend continues. (((hugs)))

Hey, Jazz,
You and I went through the same classes as young girls. My mother sewed a lot and I had two grandmas and an unmarried aunt who spent a lot of time teaching me various needlework methods and I was a 4-H sewing member. Now when we teach a young lady to sew at 4-H she doesn't have the help of a mother who sews. The girls have to do all their sewing at meetings since there isn't any help at home. So sad to see these arts and crafts disappearing.

Just finished judging a fair. I did the craft section for adults and then with the juniors. The quality of crafting was not up to par this year. Some 4 H projects were handed in (20 of the same ornament) and nothing else in the holiday category. I just couldn't bring myself to give a best of show in this category. I asked, "Do they have to have best of category/" and I was told, "No." Sure hope they didn't decide to do that. Kids put together two plastic lids with 2 Christmas cards inside. They double taped the edge of the plastic lid and added a ribbon. That was it! Oh, the older kids didn't pay attention to having the cards facing in the right direction! Just couldn't give a 12 year old a blue ribbon on that. Haha...did tell the child that they chose nice cards to work with. :) I just had to give a positive comment. These are are future crafters!

Our county fair has a huge list for open class, there was wood crafts, holiday crafts, crochet & knitting, every kind of needle work, lots of sewing .There was a huge list , there was even a red white & blue catagory ! There was alot of crafts there. The one i`m doing next month has a small list for open class.
The 4H building had alot of crafts in them and sewing too.
Maybe it just depends on the area ???

Took some pictures today.
Here is granddaughter's quilt:
Bethany's quilt

and our club's crazy display. Theme was CSI Greene (our county)
Club display

I had made the 4-H quilt square just to see how it would look so made it into a pillow. Will be used for a silent auction later.
