Subject: Remembering Christmas' Past

Do you remember these?
- Bubble lights
- Aluminum trees
- felt elves - I think they are coming back & are now called, Elf on a Shelf
- angel hair - gave a lovely glow with lights, but was actually spun fiber glass
- large light bulbs & they got so hot
- putting your live tree in a bucket of water & rocks
- using a white bed sheet under the tree, mainly to capture the dried needles as they dropped off the tree
- lead tinsel - heavy, & sometimes colored on one side
- crochet granny square boot around a can for holding candy, etc
- bowls/baskets made from Christmas cards laced together
- knitted stockings with a Christmas motif knitted in
- formula-size can with both ends cut out, wrapped with yarn to display Christmas cards
- knitted or crochet snowmen
- soldier made of clay pots & painted
- santas, elves made from pinecones
- little paper houses with red cellophane over the windows so when a light was inserted, the windows glowed

What do your remember? (((hugs)))

Jazz,
I remember how glad I was when my Parents got an artificial Christams Tree, we had fresh cut trees from the farm and they were Cedar, not very pretty! My husband says they used to drill holes and add limbs to their trees.
I Still Love the bubble lights to this day! My nephew wanted the Alum. tree with the color wheel that his Great Grandmother had a few yrs ago, New to him!
I never liked the Grey tinsel what a mess, I think you covered the list pretty well!
Happy Holiday!

Jazz.. nice thoughts of Christmas past. Glad you posted to see what comes to mind from the "olden days."

Our windows in the living room with White Sheer Ruffled Cris-Cross Curtains with a Beautiful Red Velvet Poinsettia on the tieback each side.

Darlene... I remember how we had to buy 2 Christmas Trees and drill holes in the best looking one to fill in limbs and always having to tie it up so it wouldn't fall down...never would stand straight. Putting the Christmas Tree up on Christmas Eve.

Tin Ornaments..Glass Pinecone Ornaments..Beautful Old Glass Shaped Ornaments..Bottle Brush Trees...Flocked Christmas Santa Boots candy holder...and a Beautiful Ceramic Christmas Tree. When time to take the ornaments off they were stored in a large cardboard box. (very carefully)

There was always a Train Set put in the corner..my Dad built a platform and my Brother still has his Lionel Train Set all in their original boxes and still in working order.

Santa would bring the boys Tinker Toys..Lincoln Logs..Chemistry Sets..Erector Sets..and Cowboy Set too.
Of course us girls always wanted Doll Babies..I still have many of my Dolls...Bride Doll..Revlon Doll etc. and remember how they were placed in the Doll Baby Crib which I still have.

Most important of all the kids always believed in Santa and always went to see Santa at the department store (Santa was only at one store in the town and I still have the photo's of my Brother and me visiting Santa from way back when.

Most important we would always wish every one a Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holiday!

Bet you didn't expect me to rattle on and on...but it brought back many memories to me.

Hugs~ Joann

Eagerly waiting until the day after Thanksgiving to finally see all of the animated and decorated store windows.
Having a Christmas Club at the bank and putting money in every week.
The Sears and Montgomery Ward toy catalogs.
Waiting all year for one special gift.
Felt tree skirts with sequin-covered shapes.
A beautiful red velvet dress for the Sunday School program.
A Christmas tree in your classroom decorated with ornaments each child brought from home.
A tiny blue bottle of Evening in Paris perfume that you could buy for 10 cents at the dime store for your mom.
Lace or net hostess apron for your teacher.
A silver dollar from grandma for each of the grandkids.
Taking all of the tinsel off of the tree and saving in a box for next year!

Thanks Jazz for bringing up some great memories. I can still hear those little dry needles dropping on the wrapped packages as you walked across the floor.

Does anyone remember using Glass Wax and stencils to decorate your windows?

bwacky...

My Aunt Sadie would always use Glass Wax on her windows at Christmas time...she used stencils and also did dabbles to make it look like snow. She was the "Pro" when it came to using Glass Wax!

Thanks for bringing back that memory I have of long ago.

Hugs~ Joann

I still have the lead tinsil in the original boxes. I think I have 10 or 12 packs of them. My brother's are drooling over them. Guess when I dig the boxes up, I'll give them some happiness.

Also have plastic Santas that had suckers sticking out the backpack Santa had. Have some plastic Santas that are on skis. Found a cardboard sleigh and plastic reindeer this summer in my stash of stuff. The sleigh had some transparent glitter sprinkled on it. I did give those to one brother as what fun is it to have them in a box for no one to enjoy. The plastic Santas were very thin hard plastic and have yellowed. I believe those to be from the 40s and 50s

Thanks everyone, for responding. So many things I had forgotten about.

Darlene, one of my aunts always had a cedar tree. Talk about prickly.

Joann, when I was about 3-4, I had a Gerber baby doll. My folks were pretty poor in those days, so my mom took my doll & washed her really well. Then she made her clothes that matched the ones she made for me. I lost the doll in our many moves (military) but I still have the clothes.

SueZQ, I remember the felt tree skirts; I still have one somewhere. And net hostess aprons. Oh yes, the Christmas Club at the bank. One bank gave us bayberry candles every Christmas. I can still smell them in my mind.

Bwacky, what is glass wax? I remember we had some Christmas stencils for spray snow. Man, that was awful to get off of the windows.

Bizzee, you still have the lead tinsel? How cool is that?

Have a cool Yule, y'all. (((hugs)))
