I'd be using a glass or plastic "Red Christmas Ball" for this project...(no painting to do!)

Would make a nice Teacher Gift. (Patty something for your niece or a nice quick Bazaar item?)

Yes, Karen would love that for sure!!! I think I have some red glass Christmas balls. I like Skippy's idea of the leaf to make it look like an apple.
