Subject: University area Belfast - Murder hunt

launched after house fire death

DETECTIVES investigating the death of a man in a house fire in south Belfast yesterday are now treating it as murder.

One person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Firefighters arrived at the house at Camden Street, just off University Road, shortly after 2.30pm yesterday, when neighbours raised the alarm after noticing smoke and flames coming from the first floor.

Firefighters had to force entry to the partially boarded-up house.

The unoccupied house is understood to have been a sleeping place for homeless people and drifters.

Detective Superintendent Alan Mains, speaking at the scene today, said preliminary inquiries into the 32-year-old man's death had led police to treat the incident as murder.

According to Det Supt Mains the man suffered severe head wounds as a result of being badly beaten.

"This was a communal type house or squat with lots of people coming and going at different times," he said.

"We would like to speak to anyone who was in the area between 1pm and 4.30pm yesterday."
