On Saturday, May 5, 2001 approximately 70 people gathered at St. Mary of Mercy Church in downtown Pittsburgh to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1981 Hungerstrikes.

Father Thomas Aquinas celebrated the Mass and discussed the sacrifice that the men in Long Kesh made to further the cause of justice in Ireland. Breandan Magee, of Belfast here as a graduate student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh on the Gerry Adams Scholarship, spoke movingly before the start of Mass about the discrimination, bigotry and suppression of rights that led many people in Ireland to rebel against British occupation. He also spoke of the turnaround in public opinion after the Hungerstrikes and how it thrust Sinn Fein into the public eye as a legitimate political entity.

After Mass, a light brunch and discussion was held at a Liberty Center eatery. Special thanks to Jim Caldwell for coordinating the brunch and to Mary Mannion for offering the prayers of petition on behalf of the hungerstrikers during Mass and for the gospel readings.
