Subject: University area belfast - Man admits woman's murder

A 21-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the murder of a young woman in Belfast two years ago.
Conor McCrory of Grangeville Gardens in Finaghy, on the city's outskirts, asked for the murder charge to be put to him when he appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Monday morning.

He then changed his plea to one of guilty of the murder of Maria McConnell.

Maria, 22, from Coolnasilla Park East, off the Glen Road, was found dead in a house after being missing for nearly two weeks.


Maria McConnell had been missing for 13 days

She disappeared after visiting a Belfast nightclub on 14 July 2000.

Her body was found 13 days later in a terraced house in Canterbury Street in the university area of south Belfast.

The young woman had been treated for depression and rarely ventured outside the family home until the night she went to the Brunswick Street club in Belfast.

The judge, Mr Justice Higgins, adjourned the case for pre-sentence submissions, which will be heard at the end of the month.
