Student loans: click to check up

By Kathryn Torney Belfast telegraph 30th July 2002.

STUDENTS across Northern Ireland are able to check out the progress of their student loan applications via a special website for the first time.

The new facility - at www.student-support.org.uk - is linked with the five education and library board websites.

During a two week period in July nearly 10,000 users logged on to track the progress of their loan applications at an average of 649 per day. A total of 1,190 forms were downloaded and the page viewing total recorded was 57,986.

The new e-support facility offers students a completely confidential service.

They log in with their surname, date of birth and unique identity number and, as well as using a search engine to find out what stage their application has reached, they can download forms, e-mail queries and get information about discretionary awards criteria, disabled student's allowance, higher education and further education bursaries and part-time study.

There is a section with answers to frequently asked questions and links to other useful sites, including local universities.

Chairman of the Management Board for Student Support Robin Harper said: "We expect many more students to use the service once the examination results are announced and it should be an excellent help in providing them with speedy information."
