Subject: QUB Belfast students support tribute to irish republican students

Growing support for Queens tribute to Mairead: Meehan

A growing number of students at Queen’s University are in favour of a common room or lecture hall being renamed in memory of former QUB student Mairead Farrell.

That’s the view of South Antrim Sinn Fein Councillor Martin Meehan, who was speaking during a lecture in the university’s senior common room.

Standing in for Belfast Lord Mayor Alex Maskey, Martin Meehan was the guest speaker at a seminar entitled ‘Taking the gun out of Irish Politics”.

Speaking to the Andersonstown News afterwards, Martin Meehan said: “The last time I attended QUB was in the early sixties as part of a boxing competition.

“So I was only too willing to stand in for Alex not only to address such a distinguished and open-minded group of people, but to revisit the University for the first time in more than forty years and I am enjoying my first ever pint in this establishment.”

Cllr Meehan took the opportunity to pay tribute to the student members of the Sheena Campbell QUB Sinn Féin Cumann.
“By naming their cumann in memory of Sheena, they continue to honour Irish Republican students within a prestigious institution of learning in a highly fitting manner,” he said.

“My suggestion to name a common room or lecture hall after former student Mairead Farrell seeks to encourage the university chiefs to emulate the set practice of the QUB Irish Republican students,” he added.

Since first making the suggestion, Cllr Meehan said a number of students have contacted him to voice their support.
