A BRIGHT young student has told how she wants to make herself 'ugly', after someone she trusted violently raped her.

Amy (not her real name) came to Belfast from a small town in the countryside to study at university.

The 19-year-old was enjoying student life and had a boyfriend at college.

She had only been in the city a few months when she went out for a drink with her flatmates, her boyfriend and his mate.

At the end of the night, they returned to the flat and the mate slept on the sofa.

In the morning, the boyfriend went off to work early, leaving everyone else in bed.

Amy was woken by the mate trying to get into her bed: he had a knife.

When she tried to struggle, he threatened to cut her.

"I was terrified: I thought he was going to kill me," she said.

He raped her twice, his knife at her throat.

And then warned her if she told anyone, he'd tell her boyfriend she had come on to him.

Terrified that she wouldn't be believed, Amy told no-one.

But she started having flashbacks and nightmares about the rape, and realised she had to tell someone.
