Talks planned on student homes worry

By David Gordon BT.

DOE planning officials are to seek a meeting with University of Ulster chiefs, following claims that Portstewart and Portrush are suffering from "excessive student occupancy".

The Department of Employment and Learning is to be asked to participate in the talks, which will focus on student accommodation provision.

The initiative was revealed by Environment Minister Sam Foster in a letter to East Londonderry Assemblyman David Mc- Clarty.

The Minister also informed the Assemblyman that the University was planning to provide additional accommodation on its Coleraine campus.

Mr McClarty today said Portstewart and Portrush were losing community spirit, due to excessive development and developers exploiting the high demand for student accommodation in the area.

Local communities are experiencing high densities of multiple student occupancy, while Portstewart, and to a lesser extent Portrush, are turning into "off-site halls of residence", he said.

Mr McClarty described the planned talks as "extremely positive".

He added: "I would hope visionary solutions would result from the meeting, which will provide a long- term cure to the problems of excessive student occupancy in the area.

DoE figures, published last month, showed that 1,191 new apartments were granted planning permission in the Coleraine borough between 1997 and 2001.
