As dumb as the kid sounds, the reporter has got to be even dumber from some of the questions asked. Then again, a good reporter frames them for the level of the subject being interviewed.

Monday, January 29, 2007

Each week staff writer Kevin Callahan does a question and answer with a South Jersey high school athlete. This week's subject is Clarence Jackson, a senior basketball player for Cherokee High School.

Q: What is your coolest hat?

A: My Yankees hat.

Q: What made you choose Siena College?

A: Coaching staff, the players and the opportunity to play right away.

Q: What will you major in at college?

A: Business.

Q: Your teammate Ronson Quick is the son of former Eagles great wide receiver Mike Quick, could you cover Mr. Quick one-on-one right now in football?

A: No, come on, he is the greatest receiver to play for the Eagles.

Q: Who is the best dunker in South Jersey?

A: I would have to say myself, I can jump with the best of them.

Q: Were you a grade-school phenom?

A: Yeah, I was good, but a lot of people didn't really know about me.

Q: What is your favorite high school team not your own?

A: I would have to say Shawnee. I just like they way they play well together.

Q: What coach taught you the most about life?

A: Coach (Ron) Powell taught me a lot, not just with basketball, but my future after it whether it was playing or not.

Q: Coach Powell has a cool long black leather jacket, but does he drive a cool car?

A: Actually that's the first time I've seen him wear that jacket and his car is not that impressive -- he drives this black truck and you know it's his.

Q: Your teammate Richie Tarr is the son of former La Salle great guard Rich Tarr, could you cover Mr. Tarr one-on-one right now in basketball?

A: I think I could. Mr. Rich still has some game -- especially his jump shot.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you know?

A: Richie Tarr, he thinks he is the best looking person on earth.

Q: If you could only read one, what Web site would it be?

A: Rivals

Q: What is a better movie for prospective college students, Wedding Crashers or Animal House?

A: Wedding Crashers, in my opinion, is one of the best movies I've seen.

Q: What artist/group is in your iPod the most?

A: Jay-Z.

Q: Do your parents have any cool DVDs?

A: Yeah, my dad Clarence Sr., has some OK DVDs.

Q: Nicest person on an opposing team?

A: Julian Sanders from Shawnee.

Q: What book would you rather read than play PlayStation?

A: I don't know about books. I read Sports Illustrated or Slam magazines.

Q: What pro athlete would you like to play XBox against?

A: Ray Allen. He is one of my favorite NBA players

Q: Who is the high school athlete in South Jersey you don't know would like to get an IM?

A: Dante Bailey from Atlantic City.

Q: What person is the first on your cell phone speed dial?

A: My mom, Anita

A: Miami.

Q: Best drill in practice to daydream?

A: Foul shooting.

Q: Best dresser on your team to help a sportswriter who still wears patches on his coat jacket elbows?

A: Richie Tarr.

ED NOTE: Sure Toni, when a recruit says something that makes sense you're the first to tell us what a smart kid you have on board. Of course that doesn't happen very often does it?

Do you know how he does in school? I'm not bothered by that. When I go to Barnes and Noble, I pick up sports magazines too, not Charles xxxxens. It doesn't really mean anything. At least he reads something.

ED. NOTE: Yes you fit nicely into this mold, Goobey.
