I managed to catch School Committee challenger Matthew Sheehan’s interview yesterday on WCAP, and all I can say is that if that half-hour or so segment was any indication of what we can expect to see (or hear) from this guy till the Town Election in May – then I feel fairly confident to say that lone incumbent D.J. Deeb has very little to worry about on successfully securing a reelection victory for the Dracut School Committee this year.
Sheehan started off by saying that he works as a chef at Lenzi’s Restaurant and Catering on Route 110. Warren “Barnyard Animal” Shaw, who was hosting this particular radio interview, tried to calm Sheehan down by reminding him how long those two have personally known each other and that talking on the radio was no big deal.
In a point of public disclosure, which was never revealed during this radio interview, Sheehan had worked for Shaw at the now-defunct Wicked Good Ice Cream about 10-15 years ago. Too bad Sheehan didn’t elaborate a little bit on his career at Wicked Good Ice Cream, along with his working relationship with the “Barnyard Animal”, it would’ve sounded a heck of lot more interesting than what he actually wound up doing:
Rehashing the typical campaign cliches we’ve all heard about a zillion times before:
“I just felt it was time to ‘give back’ to the community.”
“I represent a ‘new face’ to serve on that School Committee.”
“I haven’t had an opportunity yet to look through the School Department budget, which I’m in the process of doing now, but when I do, I’ll get back with you on that one.”
“My family’s reputation in this area is one of ‘honesty and integrity’.”
“My wife and I will probably be starting a family soon, and when we do, we’ll want our kids to attend the Dracut public school system.”
“Whenever I say or do something, I have every intention to stand accountable for my own actions. I’m not going to blame anyone else for something I did or said.”
Yo, Matthew dawg: Don’t ya think you should’ve waited till you were a little bit better prepared before you did a media interview like that? Perhaps have, at least, a couple of big issues to push in this type of media interview to help distinguish yourself from your incumbent opponent? Since you’re sort of “tight” with your former boss, Warren, why didn’t you wait till about the 3rd or 4th Saturday in April? As in, a wee bit closer to the election so you could better influence the voters’ opinions?
But what do I know – I’m just an ordinary schmuck slinging mud at Dracut public figures from out here in Cyberspace.
What really made this interview sound pathetic was how Warren and his show’s “regulars”, namely Tom Burns and Pee Wee Herman, absolutely DOMINATED this interview time with not only their questions, but also their personal opinions of the Dracut School Department. In other words, had you tuned into this segment 1-2 minutes late, you’d swear Burnsy, Warren, and Pee Wee were all running for the Dracut School Committee, while Sheehan was simply there as the radio station’s producer, or something like that. Absolutely incredible!
Any political candidate worth his/her weight in soiled toilet paper would go into a radio or, local access cable TV interview with the mind-set of totally dominating the discussion and “hogging” all the ever-precious available on-air minutes for themselves.
Sheehan ended his interview by saying he was holding a campaign fund-raiser in the next couple of weeks at a barroom owned and operated by another remnant from the “Wicked Good Ice Cream family”. That would be, of course, Jim Gookin, who co-owned Wicked Good, along with Mr. Shaw back when Sheehan was employed there.
My personal advice to D.J. Deeb
Shaw ended the interview segment with Sheehan by saying he’d be reaching out to Matt’s opponent, D.J. Deeb in an effort for “equal time” on his radio show. Personally, I don’t think Deeb has anything to really worry about in the proverbial “one-ups-man-ship department”, which is a part of most political campaigns. Sheehan, being ill-prepared yesterday, killed himself in this particular interview.
It would be hysterical, however, to have somebody call up during the Saturday morning show on WCAP and ask Deeb a question about, WarrenShaw.com – that ought to shut the Barnyard Animal up once and for all!
Let me reiterate what I said recently on another string in this forum, D.J. Deeb ought to volunteer to sing the Styx classic, Too Much Time On My Hands, during this week’s Scholarship Telethon event. Although nobody really expects D.J. to hit the high notes of that tune quite like a consummate singing professional as Dennis DeYoung, lead singer of Styx, but I think the lyrics of that song typifies as well as compliments Deeb’s personality and when the Scholarship Telethon’s audience experience that for themselves they’ll have a lot more respect and admiration for D.J.
Just between me, you, and the lamppost – I can hardly wait till Warren has Town Moderator challenger Charlie Maraganis on his radio show for that “equal time”. Now that would truly be radio talk show entertainment at its finest.
