Questions over DHS vice principal's hiatus

DRACUT -- Hank Golec has been absent from his job as vice principal at Dracut High School for more than a month, and school officials have kept mostly quiet about his employment status and the ongoing controversy that has dogged the vice principal since the beginning of the school year.
Superintendent of Schools W. Spencer Mullin said he has to protect the privacy of workers in personnel matters and wouldn't say how many sick days Golec has used in his absence or whether he has been placed on paid or unpaid administrative leave.
But Golec's absence from the high school hasn't kept him from his coaching position with the Greater Lowell Technical High football team.
James Generoso, principal at Dracut High School, said Golec hasn't been to work at the high school since mid-September. That's when The Sun learned school officials had opened an internal investigation into allegations Golec was responsible for a breach in the school's security system and allegedly misused surveillance equipment at the high school.
School officials are investigating allegations that Golec used a school-owned surveillance camera to secretly tape DHS football coach Jeff Moore leading a summer weightlifting session, then sent the recording to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, arguing that the session was in violation of MIAA rules.
It turned out the session was legal by MIAA standards because the weightlifting session was open to all students, not just the football team.
Generoso said Golec had been using his sick days during the early days of his absence, but Generoso said he no longer knows whether that's still true.
But Golec hasn't been out sick when it comes to his position as varsity football line coach at the Greater Lowell Tech and GLTHS Athletic Director David MacLaughlin said there hasn't been any discussion about Golec leaving his coaching position at the regional school.
"Absolutely," said MacLaughlin when asked if Golec had been attending all football team's games and practices.
Golec's coaching position at GLTHS pays $4,560, according to the school's salary records.
Matthew Sheehan, chairman of the Dracut School Committee, refused to comment on Golec's status with the Dracut school system.
"We're not going to discuss it because it is a personnel matter," said Sheehan, who said the School Department's lawyers, the superintendent and the high school principal were handling the matter.
The School Department's lawyer, Ed Morris, has not returned repeated calls seeking comment.
Golec, who has spent 34 years working for the Dracut schools as a teacher, varsity baseball coach and administrator, did not return a call after a message was left with a woman who answered the phone at his home.
