We had no problems, we fed our fs lots of yard (pesticide-free) materials. As for the acorns, we looked for the acorns with the black dot on the side, at the cap. Means a moth has put its egg inside. When the egg hatches, a larva starts to eat the nut. Then the worm works its way out to become a moth.
We kept the black dot acorns in a special bucket. When the larva/worms hatched out, our fs loved to dig through the acorns to eat the larva! We sometimes used tweezers to hand feed them. We never had the fs so excited as when they lined up for those tweezers! They would eat them as quickly as we could get another larva to them.
We limited the tiny larvas to only 8 an fs a night. Again, we never had a problem. The fs were the ones who discovered the worms in the acorns and started the idea. They loved this source of protein better than mealworms, crickets, or even the spiders!
