Author: Ash (Worried Sick) [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 09:54:44 03/03/11 Thu I just started a new job just out of college and I keep making stupid mistakes. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't a responsible job, but it is as the PA to the CEO of the company. I really don't want to give up. I didn't give up college. I got my Degree,but I'm worried not that I won't be good enough for this position. I think my boss thinks he has made a mistake.Is there any one out there doing the same kind of job as me and is dyslexic. I'm so depressed with the situation. My dad had to go down to the chemist this morning to get me drugs to clam me down because I was so worried about work. All because I am frightened of making a spelling mistake. I had many an improvement needed due to careless mistakes. It came to a head in 2007 when I was on the road to disciplinary action. The point to all this is the dyslexia diganosis led to access to work being called in to do a work place assessment. They pat 80% of all costs of any equipment or mentoring that is recomened for you to have. Beleve you and me it helps. you learn to to look at things in a different way. You do learn to find solutions. I am still working on the confidence bit. Good luck

My boss doesn't know that I am a dyslexic. Not that I am ashamed I just don't want to be stereotyped. You know the way people respond when they find out. But I know I can't give up or I will have to emigrate. I have found some tools that have really helped, like claro V5. That reads out what you have written.I know your confidence has taken a hit!!! But just remember that some of the best people in the world are dyslexic. One of the best writers in the world W.B. Yeats was Dyslexic. The best thing about being a dyslexic is that you become very driven to prove people are wrong. We can do anything any1 else can do!!

That is a really bad crutch to become dependent on. Try meditation or yoga. It will have similar affect on your nerves as medication and is so much better for you. Also, I have found that when I am meditating, I remember something important from work that needs to be done and I have forgotten about it. It takes precious time, but, it has saved me many times. Also, I have found writing down "to do" lists really helps. I even have a check list of what I need as I leave to go to work and at the end of the day when I leave to come home. One more thing, check your messages several times just to make sure there are no spelling/grammer errors. Good luck to you and let us know how you do, Kim

My last job, I worked for the VA and a group of nurses. I made so many mistakes with the paperwork, that the supvr. put me on report. Even the nice nurses were getting frustrated with me. I actually quit so I could get help for myself. Let me tell you, that if people don't know that you are a dyslexic, your life in the workplace can and will be hell. I'm deathly afraid to get another job. I have heard the same stories in my support group. So, no, you are not alone. Believe me, I have had a knot in my stomach for the last 30 some odd years when it comes to work. I really want to work for myself. Just keep digging in your "staletto" heels like you did in college, and you succeed. Good luck!

However, I never told by boss that I was dyslexic because every time I did I found that it was only a matter of time before I was going to be fired. People just do not understand how an obviously educated person could make all kinds of spelling mistakes. I used MS Word spell check on everything, and stayed late finish everything up. Author: GS [ Edit | View ] Date Posted: 14:52:14 08/22/11 Mon Maybe a bit late in responding to this but I've been in the workforce for a few years now (I’m 56) and here’s what I can tell you. And tell your boss I said so. The one thing we have is we problem solve differently than most and we see things from a completely different angle and we see obvious roadblocks in a business plan that others don’t. We, at least me I don’t solve problems laterally. I have about 10,000 ideas all firing at the same time and bam one will show up as a “what about this” statement. I have no formal education past grade 12 and have been on so many high level management workshops and been the focal point of discussions because I have the ability to see a way through a problem or see potential problems when others don’t. So...use your strong abilities and don’t try to force yourself to use the weak ones. If your boss is intelligent he’ll pick up on the fact that you have some special skills and I’m betting that’s what he was thinking when he hired you. I wont say dyslexia is a gift or blessing but it does have some advantages. many disadvantages but forget those and head for the strong areas.

Ten years ago i took on a role as a Trainer that involved designing, delivering, evaluating Training to managers with a contract catering industry. The challenges i had was learning how to first write english that others could read as my spelling and grammar was appauling. Next i had to learn the subject and convince others that i was an expert. I did not complete my education back in Ireland as i was unaware that i had any problems. I got tested and learned that i had 3 conditions. Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and ADD. My shock and emotional state learning this was undescribable. What i have learnt about myself is that i never give up and that is a gift that you get with your condition. My deterimation and passion for what i want is what drives me daily. So what did i do. Well for my writting i learnt how to draft materail by coping other work from reasearching and then i time it started to come naturally. With planning work i had a to list that was in collours. Red was urgent, Purple was project work, Blue was not urget. I then learnt about Organisational Graphics and studdied them to address other areas such as problem solving and drafting material. Can i suggest you get a book of how to cope in the workplace by sylvia moody and david grant as i found this very useful. Next you need to stop giving yourself a hard time and hooking onto the one thing that is different about you to others and seeing it as a handicap. You need to learn about yourself such as what are your strengths what do you struggle with. Then use the give of communication and make friends with the organisation that can support you. Never be afraid to reach out as there is many who will only be to happy to help. I have other suggestions so please conatct me if you wish Good luck Majella
