Hi there
I am really sorry that you have experienced such a rough time. However I disagree with you regarding university to an extent.
To prove myself as clever as I was always put in the lower or sub-lower classes at school, I have done everything I can to prove that I am no dummy. I didn't know I was dyslexic until the wonderful UEL diagnosed me. I was 37.
I've held down many jobs in HR, gained my professional qualification, gained many others along the way. I left my jobs because I didn't like them.
My first degree was just that a degree! But hell I got it and without any support from the uni I was in at the time.
I am now on my second degree studying one of the hardest degree courses you can do and I am holding my own. It's not easy and I easily work twice as hard as anyone else but I am doing well.
With the right university for support and being told from an early age that I could do whatever I wanted, I just had to work hard at it, I could achieve anything.
University is open to everyone it's just a shame that you now have to pay for it.
Good luck and all the best.
