Way to go MOM!!! Keep on keeping on. Your story mimics mine/ours, except our daughter is now 12. You are not alone. The public system doesn't seem to have time /space for this incredible difference. The bottom line IS your son's overall health and you are the best support for him. My suggestions: focus on the positive. because of the brians structure your son HAS developed methods of coping and understanding things differently. This is where and why his gifts will surface if his esteem/confidence is protected. Thats your job! My daughter took great comfort and joy when she was told that her brain was just wired differently (not broken) but different, up to 20% of the population has dyslexia. We just don't fit into "their" box.(and shouldn't). Know that there is a difference between "acadenmic achievements" and intelligence and encourage him along to be HIS best. ref; Ron Davis's book: Gift of Dyslexia. Read "Overcoming Dyslexia" by Shaywitz. Learn more incredible current stuff. It will fuel your purpose, science based evidence about reading and brain functioning. Very enlightening and encouraging. I know your pain as a mother and you know what is best for your son. Come along side him and let him know that he is not alone or broken. ref: incredible list of 'out of the box" thinkers and doers. These are my daughter's heros. Find some old or new persons that line up to his interests. Make him a 'tool box' of stuff that will help him go through the system ie: spell checker, colorful pens/ papers, laptop, voice recognition program. He will need these things as time progresses. Find what works for HIM. We must each find our own solutions. Dyslexia is an acquired "disability" when we start not fitting into their box usually during Kindergarten. The path may be hard but hold the system accountable check out their mandate and hold them to it. It's their job. They are the "professionals" (apparently). I'm out west in BC and know that there is a class action lawsuit, against the ministry, for the " gross, callus, neglect of the evaluation and remediation of the disability know as dyslexia." Canada is behind places such as the UK and the USA. but there are tons of resource online and in the community. Know that you are not alone and keep on keeping on. Your son will come to see that there is "NO SHAME IN DYSLEXIA" go mom go!!!
