I don't feel that we should disclose that we are dyslexic.
It's none of their business and self-incriminating. If in fact they ask you then, yes your have to tell them.

Hey Nicky hope this helps...
1) female - more females go undiagnosed. They believe this to be true before girls are better able to hide their difficulties and struggle.(more introvert) Boys tend to lash out with their frustrations and confusion. Increase in ADD, ADHD, behavior concerns, ritilan prescription etc...epidemic rate. see to pattterns. Their young, 15-20% of the population around the globe.
2) sometimes as a defense for my stupidity or error...this was way before I actually knew I was dyslexic. It was always a joke.
3)No -never. It's hard enough to get a diagnoses of dyslexia to be able to tell your boss you are dyslexic and then would he actually know what it means.
4) No-never. It almost sound as if it's a dirty little secret. I prefer dyslexia (with a little-d) That big 'D' DYSLEXIA is just label and a tag I wouldn't want attached to my name. Then what's next... my shirt.
5)As long as I performed my job well they really didn't care. You see that's where the stress comes in . Trying not to be found out despite complete competence.
6)don't recall any concessions at all. They never knew..I didn't even know. Just alot of hard work ,anxiety and stress.
7)As a nurse- oh ya. Both positvely-empathy/compassion and negatively lack of confidence/anxiety with orders and meds. I feel dyslexia has effected my performance in every aspect of my life. It is an intrinsic part of me. It is the framework of my mind...my life.
8)Receiving verbal orders in stressfull acute situation. Keeping and knowing meds & dosages when orders are called out. Staying focused (out of the fog)stress anxiety and fatigue combat low self-esteem and confidence.
9)None made, it's my professional responsiblity to adapt my environment not because I'm "Dyslexic" but because I need to get a job done. quickly safely and responsibly
10)Sweeping change is not possible. Each and every dyslexic person must find their own way. It's not that we can't adapt we just need to be empowered to adapt. We each build our own tool kit that we will carry through life.
11)In the US, not in Canada. Hope not...I take offense that the state has labelled and classified this as a 'disability'. I wonder is someone who is colorblind disabled too?
12)The myths surrounding dyslexia are extensive and many have been busted. I hear some employers seek out dyslexics because of their great attributes; ie: perserverance, creativity, logical rationalizing, problem solving abilities, critical thinking skills,oh shall I go on.....

1.female
2. No I have not told my employer
3. I think most people will see you as a leak link.
4. I did not during the interview. My current boss does know some about my condition but has not said anything.
5. At first it is hard to tell how they will react. Alot of it is a judgment call
6.I think they were
7. my dyslexia does effect my work sometimes. That is why I have people check my work or if it is very important I have a couple people I trust check it.
8. Mixing up numbers and letters. Reading long documents.
9. I am luck that one of the programs we use allows us to make some adjustment to formate and color. But, no spell check so I do a lot of cut and past
10. I am not sure of all devices out there to help.
11. Yes,I did. I even checked into some. The one bad thing if you use the DDA you have to get diagnosed every year and you have to pay for the test. I hear the test is between $300-500.
12. they can not do the work. They are too slow

I am female.
I have not directly told my employer I have dyslexia (and cognitive dyspraxia)
I was apprehensive as it was employment within a primary school and I feel disclosing my disability would have hindered my opportunity. I did tell them before I accepted employment that my spelling was bad and therefore would ask to use a spell checker when working with older children.
To spell checker my manager reacted positively and said it was a good example to show a child that sometimes we do not know the answer and that is o.k. we can because we can find the answer out.
I had not made my disability known so they could not make adjustments
I am yet to start this job, previously I found it had not affected my performance but I did take work home with me, as it takes me longer than an average person to complete for example a report.
I find following fast moving meetings/ conferences and conversations difficult, as sometimes I am still trying to process the information (particularly long/or unknown words) and suddenly I may be asked for a opinion. Also in general conversations I may misinterpret information when people don’t clearly say what they mean! Overall immediate reflection and note taking are strategies I have developed to deal with this.
(10) Possibly within self appraisals the employer asking whether there are any elements of the work which may be harder due to dyslexia and developing strategies to overcome this, rather than prodding along as if dyslexia is not there.
I am aware dyslexia is recognised as a disability, but feel within the selection process (interview) there is
Some employees (actually a majority of my past employees) simply do not understand enough about dyslexia, a lake of knowledge often means that their perceptions of a person with dyslexia automatically means that one’s intelligibility or capabilities are less than a average person. I feel within employment selection someone with equivalent skills, knowledge and experience whom do not have dyslexia would be consider as a safer option as an employee as exception would not need to be made. (Although most of us with dyslexia have had to developed our own strategies for coping anyway)

hope this helps good luck with your studies

-As You can see, it is kinda hard for me to keep a job!
-Sometimes I did both, but it is hard to remember from moment to moment, let alone decades.
-Couldn't tell. One did say he felt the same way, but I don't think he knew what Dyslexia was.
-No, Ya know bottom line. YA KNOW! $$$$$
-Yes
-Finding a job that fits you, and you feel comfortable
- No, I made my own ajustments. I just go on.
- PEOPLE ON THE WHOLE TO GET THEIR HEADs OUT OF THERE &$*
-Do you know, what it would take to prove it and No I did know that. There is alot of things I did not know before I was 50yrs. old, like there was such a thing called Dyslexia
-There are millions of people in this world, what do you think?

Did not mean to be short with you. But this is a touchy subject with Dyslexics. When it means life and death, $$$$. I have been blessed with a strong and healthy body, etc. I fit in with my looks, but when it comes down to it I just don't fit in at all. Especially when I was young. I am 55 now, an I have found my nich and someone who has seen where i fit into the puzzle. If it works out great, if not, try, try again. Best of luck. fred

I am a female and yes I told my employer about having dyslexia after having worked there for 20 years. The following year he fired me. Said it was slow business, but the business wasn't any different that it ever had been. So you tell me. . . . . he was an psychological abuser anyway, but I needed the job. Haven't been able to keep one since that time and don't know what I'm going to do. I have worked at a few places since but they only lasted a couple of weeks to a few months. Just can't seem to wrap my head around anything. It takes me a long, long time and a lot of notes to ever really get anything to work for me. It has been my experience that most employers just don't understand that and if you tell them you have dyslexia. . .well, they don't understand that either. I live in Missouri and there are no real programs here to help me. I was diagnosed many years ago and I have no credentials to back it up, no insurance so I can't go and get tested, so no help with the state. I should have never have told my previous employee about my condition. I am convinced that is why I lost my job. In Missouri they can fire you for anything and they don't even have to tell you why.

1) Yes I am female
2) Not apprehensive in telling them
3) Informed employer when I applied for my current job
4) My dyslexia was not a problem to begin with but now has become a big problem and have been bullied a long the way. The attitude of my manager's approach to the dyslexia has been appaling.
5)No real reasonable adjustmnts have been made but after 4 months of the problems going on my employer went to personal behind my back but now going to have a works based assessment.

7) It has affected my job and made worse by the attitue of people around me, which hascaused me a lot of stress.

8)I have problems with concentration, listening, verbal memorary, organisation and apatia awareness.

9)Not really but now have them by moving desk, but only becuas a colleague has left.

10) I would like to be able to hav special equipment but they are not keen as it may upset other people in the team. e.g recorder and speech to text software.

11) Yes aware of DDA and going to seek advice through company disability group.

12) My immediate team have little underrstanding of dyslexia but the company does have understanding in some areas. I work for social services. Did suggest we have a speaker to come in to talk about dyslexia but my supervisor felt team members might not bei interetsed.

[> Subject: PhD on Roots of Creativity in Dyslexia - Funding Request

Author:
Catherine Black (Happy)

Date Posted: 07:11:55 06/20/08 Fri

Hello Everyone,
I am going to do a PhD looking at the roots of Creativity in Dyslexia with regards to Visual-Spatial 3 Dimensional Thinking at the university of Bath starting this October in
conjunction with the Arts Dyslexia Trust. More specifically I shall be focusing on Mental Rotation (the ability of people with Dyslexia to visualize objects and letters from
different angles) and symmetry recognition (the ability to detect whether or not something is a perfect mirror image. I shall be developing a test of dyslexic strengths which could ultimately be used by schools and educational psychologists to index visual-spatial thinking ability in dyslexic children, which would allow education to be targeted at making the most of their visual-spatial strengths. It could also be used by businesses to index the visual-spatial strengths of their employees, and be a measure used to recruit visually able dyslexic employees into roles requiring visual-spatial strengths. I will also be extending this research to look at visualisation ability in autism, which will be indexed by testosterone levels.

I would be very grateful if you would be able to help fund this PhD, or put me in contact with anyone who would be able to help fund it. Here is a breakdown of the total amount of money I will need to fund myself during the 3 1/2 years it typically takes to do a PhD.

Per Week Per Year 3 1/2 Years
Accommodation 110 5720 20020
Food 30 1560 5460
Total: 25480

I am currently doing an MSc in Human Communication and Computing in the Computer Science Department at the University of Bath, which is on Human-Computer Interaction, or improving computer usability. For my Final MSc project I am doing a study on Enhancing Computer Usability for People with Dyslexia, supervised by Dr Mark Brosnan.

For my Third Year Project I did a study on Mental Rotation of the Rubik's Cube in People with Dyslexia. This involved creating complex stimuli from scratch and doing complicated statistics in the form of two 2x2x3 mixed Design Anovas, one for reaction time and one for accuracy.

Please email me and I shall send you my proposal and CV.

Best wishes,
Catherine Black

1. Are you Male or Female? Mail
2. Have you told your employers you have Dyslexia? I have just undertaken a move towards advancing at my new job I have all the documentation for accommodations in which is outlined in the documents.
3. If so were you apprehensive in telling them and if you did not tell them why? Yes I was the fact that our disability is not on the outside we can hide gives us the choice to allow those to see it or not. I did not want my disability to be the shining point of my abilities so I waited I worked I showed that what I could do with out the accommodations. And to see what type of people I was going to let into my world. And as most fear pride plays a factor.
4. Did you disclose your Dyslexia at interview or after you secured the job? I did not want my disability to be the forefront of conversation at the interview. I secured the job knowing the documentation could be added at a later time.
5. Do you feel your employer/manager reacted positively, negatively or indifferently? Not enough time has passed to be able to answer this question honestly.
6. Do you feel reasonable adjustments were made for you in the selection process? To answer this question fully I would need more information clarity of the question.
7. Do you feel Dyslexia has affected your performance at work? Does you're dyslexic tendencies affect you at school?
8. What things in particular do you find difficult at work because of your Dyslexia.
9. Has your employer made any adjustments at the workplace for you? Yes
10. If not what sort of adjustments would you like to be implemented?
11. Are you aware Dyslexia is recognized under the Disability Discrimination act? (1995) yes I am
12. In general what kind of preconceptions do you think employers have of people with Dyslexia? None whatsoever as this is my second job after my testing I believe it is still a mystery to many employers. They fall back to the old illiteracy not smart enough traps it is old-style thinking but the easiest way to explain the problem.
