I am a female and yes I told my employer about having dyslexia after having worked there for 20 years. The following year he fired me. Said it was slow business, but the business wasn't any different that it ever had been. So you tell me. . . . . he was an psychological abuser anyway, but I needed the job. Haven't been able to keep one since that time and don't know what I'm going to do. I have worked at a few places since but they only lasted a couple of weeks to a few months. Just can't seem to wrap my head around anything. It takes me a long, long time and a lot of notes to ever really get anything to work for me. It has been my experience that most employers just don't understand that and if you tell them you have dyslexia. . .well, they don't understand that either. I live in Missouri and there are no real programs here to help me. I was diagnosed many years ago and I have no credentials to back it up, no insurance so I can't go and get tested, so no help with the state. I should have never have told my previous employee about my condition. I am convinced that is why I lost my job. In Missouri they can fire you for anything and they don't even have to tell you why.

3. If so were you apprehensive in telling them and if you did not tell them why? NO THERE WASN'T ANY APPREHENSION, I FELT THEY DESERVED TO KNOW. ALSO NOT USING IT AS AN EXCUSE BUT TO UNDERSTAND MY WAY OF WORKING.
4. Did you disclose your Dyslexia at interview or after you secured the job? AFTER
5. Do you feel your employer/manager reacted positively, negatively or indifferently? THIS MIGHT NOT MAKE SENSE BUT IT WAS POSITIVE BUT IT WASN'T ENCOURAGING
6. Do you feel reasonable adjustments were made for you in the selection process? N/A
7. Do you feel Dyslexia has affected your performance at work? YES
8. What things in particular do you find difficult at work because of your Dyslexia. CONCENTRATION IS THE HARDEST FOR ME AND MY OFFICE IS VERY LOUD. I DO GET A BIT UPSET WHEN COWORKERS INTERRUPT ME.
9. Has your employer made any adjustments at the workplace for you? NO, I HAVE ASKED TO BE MOVED TO A QUITIER LOCATION TO WORK, BUT I WAS DENIED BECAUSE "MY JOB TITLE DOESN'T WARRENT AN OFFICE."
10. If not what sort of adjustments would you like to be implemented? A QUITIER LOCATION & EXPLANATION OF BENEFITS IN PERSON. MY JOB SENDS THE EXPLAINATIONS THROUGH EMAIL. IT TOOK ME HOURS TO TRY TO UNDERSTAND MY 401K BENEFITS.
11. Are you aware Dyslexia is recognised under the Disability Discrimination act? (1995) REALLY?
12. In general what kind of preconceptions do you think employers have of people with Dyslexia? THAT IT IS AN EXCUSE FOR UNSATISFACTORY WORK & THAT WE ARE EMONTIONAL WITH BAD ATTITUDES.
