Hi Laura,
I am just about to turn 23 and just graduated from college with a degree in political science and economics. I too graduated with a high high school GPA (3.98) and graduated Magna Cum Laude (3.88) from college. Dyslexia has been a challenge for me to overcome since kindergarten. I never understood why I had a difficult time learning how to spell, do math, or why I had such a difficult time memorizing things. I had to work twice as hard as everyone else to get the same thing accomplished. It wasn't until I was in high school that I put two and two together that I had dyslexia. Although never officially tested, I have the exact same symptoms as my aunt who was "officially" tested.
Once I realized why I was having a difficult time, I made my life goal to learn how to live in harmony with it. As soo n as I made myself understand it was not going away, things became easier. I too was afriad to go to college as I thought for sure I would not succeed with dyslexia. My advise is go for it! With so much being typed (thank goodness for spell check) it makes the process so much easier. What I have found is when I take notes I know how to spell the words, but I write them wrong and don't percieve it. However typing is much easier for me (although I am not a very good typist) as you are not writing things down (its hard to explain). Don't focus so much on spelling, it will come. The way I have learned to over come it is to look at everything separately and then put it back together. Also when I feel anxiety, I step back for a minute and then I am fine.
I could go on and on about my experiences, but I am very proud of what I have accomplished. Today I am a financial analyst for a large company and I NEVER thought I would be able to work with numbers. I still have to work hard and still have to work around my dyslexia, but I don't stress about it and it all works out! Don't let it stop you, as we can be so successful due to our work ethic!
