Steve, How is it that you are a teacher who
is seeking teaching advice? I am a degreed
teacher and a dyslexic and I know where to
go at the universities, at the Libraries,
book stores, and on-line for dyslexia information?
What is your story?
Mrs.LongleyM.Ed.

The 'e' in America is actually an r controlled vowel.
It doesn't make it's true short e sound - so that's a completely different thing. When teaching short vowels to a dyslexic, you really have to take care to pronounce them correctly and make sure you've chosen words with the true short vowel sounds.
I use the Barton method to tutor and have seen great successes. www.bartonreading.com
Level two is Consonants & short vowels. I've also used the Lindamood Bell LIPS program to teach the phonemes.
Best wishes.
