I am a certified special ed teacher in texas. I am a very frustrated teacher. In the district i used to work in the students that were identified as special ed were not given any support in the area of dyslexia. When i asked my principal about this i was told that "yes, they probably do have dyslexic tendencies". I am frustrated becasue there is no support for these students nor is the any support for me their teacher. I am currently taking the course "Certificat in the Teaching of Children with Dyslexia". I am doing this in hopes of being able to give the help and support these children need. I was wondering if anyone out there is feeling as frustrated as i am?

Yes in Teacher training Course globally, perhaps not enough emphasis is placed on dealing with children who have special needs. In most cases in a three or four year training course, you usually study one semester unit where you focus on the special needs of the blind; the mentally impaired;the handicapped; the deaf; conditions such as dyslexia that for so many cause frustration with the whole schooling process and the schooling years.
So yes...you are lucky if your course in your country has one unit covering same....and then you emerge as a teacher having forgotten what you have read ...and no experience of identifying the condition in practice. Like medicine...same comes with time and experience and is often accumulated whilst working in schools that cater for children with specific needs....and not the mainstream. General teacher training courses only cover the mainstream. Further study is often required to gain specialization in same...and yes I can understand your frustration if you have never had any experience during prac. in catering for students with special needs. You are not alone. The training of teachers is similar to that of training doctors in that until you go out practicing...you have limited knowledge with which to identify a particular condition. I think the best thing is to record as many symptomns as possible that you observe...and then through a process of elimination and consultation with others in the school that you are at...get specialist help and advice....and then proceed from there. Yes...I know how you are feeling. So many years ago, I must admit...I felt the same. I guess everything just can't be included in a generalist teacher training course. Many complain that same course is already jam packed to overflowing for the time and credits that are posed as outlines. An extra course focusing on Special education will help.

Dear Donna,

Since you are involved with dyslexia and education I was wondering if maybe you could help me with a problem we are having with our son.He was diagnosed with Dyslexia at age 8.He had great help in elementary school. Then we moved over seas and he had no assistance at all. He lost most of the skills he had learned. He struggled through High School. He is now 19 years old and is struggling at a Junior College. He plans to continue to a University. I am afraid he does not have the skills to succeed there. I would like to find a University that deals with students with Dyslexia. is there such a place? He is interested in Business. Can you lead me to right direction?

Thank you.

Luisa

try finding an Irlen Diagnostician in your area. You can look up the website www.irlen.com and the Australian Association of Irlen Consultants.... www.aaic.org.au

the same problem is experienced by teachers in Australia, but the NSW Government has just passed a Bill that recognises children with dyslexia as among those requiring special education teacher support... a great win for those children!!

I would like to ask Dr. Brien where one get tested for Irlen syndrome. After reading the post I checked Irlen syndrome out and I understand why I have problems. I do not like bright lights and I have difficulties judging the speed of approaching traffic as well as having difficulties catching a ball. Thank-you

Joan

If the school is trying to dismiss the problem it is up to you to do the research and present them with it. I printed the pages of descriptions from this site; http://www.ncld.org/content/view/916/456103/ and highlighted everything that matched up with my son. It was eye opening. Up until now they had my son classified under Autism umbrella so that they could give him extra help even though they know he's not autistic.

I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND I AM TRYING TO GET OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT TO WORK WITH MY DAUGHTER. ITS ALMOST LIKE THEY DONT WANT THE OBLIGATION OF HELPING THE CHILDREN THAT ARE REALLY STRUGGLING ITS SAD BECAUSE WHY TEACH IF YOUR NOT THEIR TO HELP. THE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND IS NOTHING BUT A BIG JOKE. THE SCHOOLS DONT WANT HELP THE ONES THAT ARE HAVING TROUBLE BECAUSE IT PUTS THE REST OF THE CLASS BEHIND.
