Hello,

I have a problem and would like to know if anyone has gone or is going through something like this. In my job, I have to sometimes submit reports on some of my cases. We have to write a narrative, just explaining in detail what happen, what we did and so on. If our supervisor finds something wrong, i.e. spelling or grammar errors, the report will get rejected. Of course, if anyone wants to eventually move up in the dept. they look at their past reports and they can see how many are rejected and just how well you write your reports.

Now, my reports aren't bad, but I get a lot of them rejected because of some small grammar error. Sometimes I will write "the instead of they" or I'll leave out a word, things like that, things that spell check wont catch. I do read over them, and when I think it is nothing but perfect i submit it, only for it to get rejected.

It is so disappointing, upsetting and I just don't know what to do anymore. I try so hard to make sure it is perfect and when it gets rejected, I feel like just got get kicked in the stomach!

Please, can someone please give me some advise or maybe something that you have tried that helped you..... anything!

I'm so upset and frustrated! I try not to use my dyslexia as an excuses, but I don't know what to do. SOS!

TRY READING IT ON DIFFERENT SURFACES I.E. THE MONITOR AND THE PRINTED PAPER. FOR ME I HAVE TO PRETEND IT IS SOMEONE ELSE'S WORK(PRETENDING I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRITTEN) AND MAKING SURE TO GO SLOWLY AND METICULOUSLY OR HAVE SOMEONE ELSE READ IT IF POSSIBLE. I'VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH DYSLEXIA ALONG WITH ADHD WHEN I WAS 9 AND TESTED AGAIN AT 16. TRY THIS GREAT BOOK BY RON DAVIS CALLED "THE GIFT OF DYSLEXIA."

Have you tried Texthelp! Read and Write? This software can read your work back to you. You can alter the speed and pitch of the voice to suit the task. You can hear mistakes more easily. It's grammar checker may also pick up errors that you describe. You will hear errors better than if you read it back yourself - because you will read what you think is there!

I am going through the very same issue. It has now come to the point where my boss is asking questions and I do not like using dyslexia as a crutch either. At this point the best solution I have found is everything you are doing as well as having my wife read over it before I submit my work. It is very time consuming and tedious for her and I. It also take a lot of planning because she is not sitting at my desk to read everything I have to write every day. However it is all I know at this point.

Over the years I have had similar difficulties with both grammatical and incorrect spelling errors in my writings and reports. During college, I would typically write and re-write my papers 4 and 5 times and still have grammar and spelling errors.

Fortunately for me, I have had significant others in my life, gifted with good writing and spelling skills that would proof read my reports before I hand them in.

Perhaps you know someone with good writing skills that you might e-mail (While at work) your reports to for a quick final review before handing them in.

Good Luck

Hi there,

I am a social worker and my whole job involves assessment and report writing. I am very much like yourself with missing words out and mis-spelling the odd word and like you my reports can get rejected as they are legal documents. I find the best option is to use Read and Write Gold with my head phones on, so that I don't disterb anyone. Read and Write Gold is a software that got me through a social work degree and is good for the non-verbal learner.

Futhermore, you can quote the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and ask for reasonable adjustments from your employer, which should result in your reports not getting rejected. Also, you could see apply for Access to Work from your local Job Centre Plus for funding support in the work place, where you could get the Read and Write Gold Software or a personal assisstant, all with no cost to you or your employer.

I hope this info has helped,

Shane

Hi Shane

I have a the similar problem, i found that i had dyslexia at 55. I have to write and read a sermon for every sunday, plus copying it to power piont so everyone can see my mistakes on the screen, I use a few things to try and help, 1. is to get my wife tor read it, but this sometimes cause a bit of an aurgement,
2 print it using my laptop on a yellow backgroung using comic sans font size 16 with 1.5 line spacing then if i think it is right change it to the acceptable format,
3 print it out and read it aloud what i have written, but here again i have to be careful as not to put words in that are not there, and getting the pauses in the right place to get the right meaning. Hope this helps.

Try typing or writing the report on coloured paper instead of white. there is a form of dyslexia which is a visual perception problem, and the white paper causes distortions of words when reading or writing. this form of dyslexia is caused by Irlen Syndrome/Scotopic Sensitivity and is treated by using coloured overlays when reading (followed by filters worn as glasses) but the colours are specific to individuals. I would suggest starting with blue paper and see whether it makes it easier for you to read and/or write. Some colours that may or may not help are pink, light green or cream. It is a matter of experimenting and seeing which one makes it easier for you. If you find that it helps, then you should consider finding an Irlen Diagnostician in your area and go along for an assessment.

Hey!

I'm totally with you on this one! I will read letters and emails over and over again thinking they're fine - send them out and then "d'oh!" the next day!

I find it helps to take a long break from the material you have written and then return to it (preferably a day later) with a 'fresh' mind. You will probably find that you will be able to spot more mistakes this way. It definitely helps with me.

Good luck!

I have the same difficulties you mention, and a couple of things that work for me are:

- When using email, wordprocessor or powerpoint, I use only Trebuchet MS or Arial fonts, with at least size 11/12.
- I try to type the message straight out, letting the spell checker catch the reversal of/missing letters, and then SLOWLY re-read the entire document looking for errors.

Still, I sometimes miss things, so don't be disheartened, sometimes a little joke about it to those that are concerned helps them understand.

Good luck !
