Subject: Repairing Admiral 25 rubbing strakes

Our Admiral has hardwood rubbing strakes fitted along the entire length of the gunwale. Can any of you tell me what lies beneath? We've got to replace a section on either side, where the wood has started to rot. I'm scared to cut in case the hull joint protrudes into the strake. Looking at the fitting, it seems as though the main part of the strake is screwed through to timber on the inside of the edge of the deck but there's a secondary strip fastened underneath the strake throughout. The section around the curve of the bow is laminated.

Has any of you worked on this feature? I'd be really pleased to hear from you -- what to be careful of, etc.

Best wishes,

Alan
