It will hopefully be obvious if the head gasket is blowing. There will be a break in the gasket between two or more of the holes eg between the tube were the valve puch rods go through to the head and one of the water cooling passages.
What you would rather not see is a score or track in the head, as this would mean having the head skimmed. Not the end of the world, though.

All this best done with a workshop manual. Do you have one? I have a spare if you want to email me.
