Most diesel engines have a lift pump and that should be sufficient, providing it has a manual priming lever. Once the fuel line from the tank to the engine is primed, the syphon effect will continue to deliver fuel to the lift pump.

Follow the line from the tank and see if you find a lift pump with a lever underneath, used to manually pump fuel.
