I think that the feed to the tacho comes off the stator windings, so you need to have this feed on your alternator.

I recently replaced the alternator on my car, a Renault 19. To get the alternator with this extra wire cost 150 instead of about 80 for one without.

If you take your alternator to a proper autoelectrician, he will tell you whether you have the correct feed and will probably convert it for a fraction of the cost of buying another alternator.

As an aside, I have fitted Sea Holly with a cycle computer from Woollies (4.99) that gives a digital reading of revs. Not as good as a nice big meter with a pointer, but very easy to fit to our Bukh engine.
