I believe that for leisure boats, only those on the "Part 1" register are required to carry port of registration. Unregistered ships and those on Small Ships Register (SSR) are not required to carry port name.

It is quite common for non-registered inland boats to carry a "port" name, perhaps after the working boats which probably were in their day required to carry a port name. Often nowdays the "port" name seems to be land locked so probably just the place where the owners live.

I think in summary, unless your boat is Part 1 registered, you can put on what port name you like. If it is Part 1, then you need to change registration, with the Registry of Ships and Seamen.
