Andrew, if you haven't resolved this yet, then maybe I can offer a useful point. The keel plate is only about 10mm thick and so you need to very carefully position the steel rod on the plate otherwise you just end up knocking hell out of the inside of the keel housing. Slacking off the cable just inboard of the sheave gives the plate some momentum if it does start to move. You can usually feel the difference between the rod being on the plate or on the keel housing. My keel often gets stuck after winter lay-up or if wound up too far. I know that I really should remove the plate, clean out its housing and replace with new bolt, bushes and cable! If anyone knows how to "easily" clean out the housing without removing the plate (and pressure wash doesn't really help) then please advise.
