Subject: I found the internet community at Maeve's just before Lifeline, and I realised almost right away, that the community affected the way I watched. I felt resentful at first at having my viewing "mediated" by the other posters, but it DID change forever, the way I viewed the show. (Inside.)

I used to watch JAG with no knowledge whatsoever about spoilers, TPTB, or who I was "supposed" to like or dislike. I didn't know anyone else who watched JAG, other than my DH and that didn't count.

Whenever I saw that TG or CA were going to be in the episode, I'd think, "Great! It's going to be about the relationship between Harm and Mac!" Oh naive moi! Never for a minute did I worry that the SOs were going to be a threat. I just took it for granted that they were there to get in the way of the H and M romance.

I was shocked when I got online and found out 1)that there were "anti-shippers", and 2)that anyone was "angry" with TPTB.

Had I watched JAG like other shows, without online discussions, I wouldn't have experienced half the angst of later arcs, such as Paraguay.

I had started to care what the community was going to think, and worry about the anger/emotion/disappointment/complaints, of other people, instead of just having private reactions as I do when I read novels or watch movies, etc.

Of course I didn't like Mic. He annoyed me, but I knew he was just a diversion. I liked Renee, but never took that relationship seriously either. What I loved about S6, was that it spawned so many discussions. There was still so much shipper hope as well. I LOVED Lifeline beyond belief, and thought Adrift 1 was the best ep artistically. I still think it was the best crafted episode, and it set up the most anticipated first season episode of all time.

I believe that 9/11 definitely changed the way JAG went. It had to as JAG was a military show. All the planes and aircraft carriers were eventually deployed. The show could not ignor what was going on, as the subject matter was directly concerned with what was happening in the real world.

So yes, the show became darker. It had to. 9/11 probably extended the life of JAG, as it gave the writers more fodder to work with.

Now when I look back, I feel that JAG was "innocent" until S7. Then the show, like the rest of us, existed in a different world.

I know I haven't answered the questions specifically. I'll make that another response if the thread is still "alive" a little later on.

[> [> You know,Cece, I wonder if the boards effected the way I saw the two seasons too...I would get irritated with Mic or Renee, I hadnt found Maeve's or the HB yet...and I couldnt believe for a minute that they'd really be a threat, in the long run and Lifeline confirmed all that.(sigh!) I did get furious with tptb...but not until after Pas de Do Do(with a nod to manette)then all bets were off, for me anyway. Maybe it just felt better to blame the powers that be, than try to make sense of what I was seeing from my 'people' (smile) -- mkim, 21:58:09 06/23/08 Mon
