Subject: Episode of the Week – Impact

Wow, great discussion below, I hate to push it down! Our EOTW is Season 3’s "Impact.” Harm and Bud investigate the mysterious crash of a Marine helicopter. Witnesses claim the helicopter collided with another aircraft, and Harm and Bud uncover a secret installation nearby that is developing a new prototype flying device for the military. But when Harm approaches the installation, he encounters potentially lethal opposition to his inquiry from government security officials. Meanwhile, Mac, who is dating Dalton Lowne, accepts a job offer from his civilian law firm and submits her resignation from JAG. This episode marks the first appearance of Harm’s nemesis Clark Palmer.

1) How do you rate this episode and why? And in this episode, Harriet joins the JAG office as an administrative assistant. Do you think the show was enhanced by having Harriet work at JAG, or did this result in too much emphasis on the personal lives of Bud and Harriet?

2) When Mac interviews at the law firm, the senior partner comments that "it would be nice to look at a pretty face around here”.    Why would Mac not be repulsed by such blatant sexist behavior?

3) Mac tells AJ that she’s leaving JAG to "spread her wings.” But what exactly did that mean? Was she dazzled by the lure of a large civilian law firm, a chance to litigate important cases, the large salary? Was she bored with her cases at JAG? Did she want to work with Dalton? Or was she running away from Harm and her feelings for him?

4) Should AJ have tried to convince Mac to stay at JAG? And why didn’t Harm try to talk her out of leaving?

5) Mac: "I’m going to miss you, Harm.” Harm: "I’ll miss you too, Sarah.” They hug, then Harm says: "Your ride’s here. Nice car.” Mac replies sadly: "Yeah, but it’s no Tomcat.”     What was Mac feeling at that moment? Was she doubting her new life, or was she doubting her new man and how he measured up to Harm? Was she longing for Harm to express romantic feelings for her?

6) Harm’s stricken face as Mac gets into Dalton’s car and they drive away is a powerful episode ending image. What was Harm experiencing -- the loss of a partner, or the loss of a deep friendship, or the loss of a romantic love? Was he feeling sadness? Or regret? Was he feeling jealousy toward Dalton?

A comment – IMO, Randolph Mantooth almost stole the show as the Marine base commander. I loved him as a young actor on "Emergency” (yes, I'm old!). And didn’t Harm look incredible in that brown Marine t-shirt?

[> I wasn't crazy about Mac going into civilian law, but the storyline with Harm and Bud was good so I'll average it to about a 4. The end scene was definitely a telling moment..inside. -- Christa, 10:34:34 07/25/08 Fri

Since we weren't getting H&M, Bud and Harriet at least gave us a stable couple. They were cute and fun in their own way and did give a glimpse, if H&M had been looking more effectively, that a relationship within the military was possible. Besides, Harriet was a good office manager.

Mac was flattered. That was the only plausable explaination that I can come up with for her not reacting negatively to that blatant sexual reference during the interview. Once again, Mac was having her own self-esteem issues and the offer and the attention were validating her self-worth at the time.

Mac was momentarily dazzled by what Dalton and his firm offered. Dalton in a lot of ways was manipulating the situation to have Mac to himself and away from the competition (Harm) - even if the competiton hadn't clued in on his feelings yet...everyone always said that they could see the connection between H&M, even when they couldn't. Mac soon learned that she really wasn't being taken seriously as a lawyer and that she had made a huge mistake in leaving JAG...in People v. Rabb. I'm not sure Mac was running away from Harm at this point..I'm not sure she was any more sure of her feelings for him than he was for her...they both were still just beginning to realize that there indeed was "a thing" between them.

AJ always tried to do what he thought was best for his people. Although angered by her decision, I think he knew it might not last...hence the non processing of her terminal leave papers ...and that she needed to find herself. If leaving, even briefly was what it took, he was willing to give her the space. Harm respected Mac and her abilities...he didn't feel that he had the right to tell her to stay, so even though he would rather have her at JAG, he too gave her the space she needed to make her own decisions.

This is when we as the audience get a glimpse of how they really feel about each other. Mac wanted a relationship with Harm and he with her, but both were still reserved about all those "complications" that would rise if they started getting serious.

Harm was sad, no doubt, he liked working with Mac and he hadn't had the chance yet to explore what might be with Mac really. Of course there were the pangs of jealousy, as he had with any male that was "on Mac's scent".

[> I'll give it a 5. Love the interaction with Harm and Bud--and the introduction of Clark Palmer. And I loved the tension that was created by Mac 'leaving' to go into civilian practice. We got to see Harm's reaction to that-- and anything that gave us a glimpse into their personal feelings for each other --was yippe kiyoooh time for me. And it made it a lot more dramatic when Mac comes back to defend Harm in People vs Rabb. I think the remark about nice to see a pretty face was a clear sign that it wasn't going to work out. Dalton was okay-- I never hated him-- but he was no Harm..lol -- manette--off to Chicago!, 14:06:52 07/25/08 Fri

[> I can't remember the ep as a whole, only in parts, so I won't rate it. (Inside) -- Cece, 14:15:59 07/25/08 Fri

2) While Mac's back story wasn't used that much as an excuse or reason for her behaviour, Mac did have a back story. She went from being an abused and abandoned child, to an alcohol dependent young woman who married the wrong man. Essentially, she came from the other side of the tracks.

Then she went into the Marines, and from there, into law and JAG. For her, the outside world of private law with a prestigious firm, would have been a great lure. For the first time in her life, she would be totally independent with a great salary and status in the corporate world. Along with that came a good looking boyfriend, and admiration...no matter how sexist, from the senior partner. I believe she was willing to overlook the statement, being so new and inexperienced outside of the military.

Of course, she soon realised that she was not satisfied with being a junior partner with all the dog work, and naturally, she missed her life at JAG, working alongside the best partner anyone could hope for, (loosely paraphrasing Mac's words.)

4) When an adult makes a life-changing decision that they've given great thought to, friends and associates have to bite their tongues. If Mac had been feeble minded and was about to be taken for a ride by some charlatan, then yes, others should step in. But Mac was capable of making her own choices. The short answer then, is no, neither AJ nor Harm should have presumed to stop her for making this life choice.

5) Oh sigh....that goodbye almost rivaled Goodbyes! I think it's pretty clear Mac was not talking about the relative merits of a car and a tomcat. She was talking indirectly about Dalton and Harm. Was she in love with Harm? Probably even she didn't know that. Do we know when we start falling in love? Not always. Sometimes we wake up and just know that we're falling for someone. But the love doesn't come from nowhere. It has to build--to infiltrate our minds and hearts often surreptitiously. Then it hits us like the arrow of Eros (or Cupid.)

Was Harm in love with Mac? Same thing as above. But whether or not either of them thought of themselves as "in love," they knew for sure that they were best friends and trusted partners. What they had was profound, and so moving apart affected them both profoundly. I believe Harm was feeling loss, sadness, regret, and jealousy...or more like the horrible feeling of being cut out of the life of someone we love. Mac's own regret and sadness would be tempered with a cross between excitement and fear of the unknown.

[> I liked this episode, alot! This was before I really got my shipper on, as far as Harm and Mac were concerned, so Dalton didnt feel like too much of threat to me. I thought Mac looked so beautiful in that red dress, I couldnt help wishing Harm could see her. Its a 4.75 for me. We had action Harm, we had funny Bud and beautiful Mac..and of course, Harm called her 'Sarah'!!! -- mkim (sigh), 14:33:20 07/25/08 Fri

[> [> Inside for the rest: -- mkim, 14:51:35 07/25/08 Fri

I think Harriet brought alot to the mix at JAG. They had to keep her TAD so she wouldnt be in Buds chain of command. I have to admit they could be tiresome, at times, but for the most part, I like their characters, they complemented Harm and Mac very well. A couple who acknowledged their feelings vs. a couple who never seemed able to.

2)I always saw that as a bit of tptb putting his own spin on things, he never seemed to apologize for being an old fashioned guy. AND to be honest, it wasnt the worst thing he couldve said. Mac was more than a pretty face, and she was confident enough to know that.(I wonder if Dalton ever did)

3)I think Mac was dazzled, not only by the circles in which Dalton moved, but by the importance of the cases that were handled by the law firm. (Little did she know she'd be a glorified law clerk)I think Mac's feeling of being handed what she saw as trivial tasks at JAG were irritating, but I dont think thats what 'spirited' her away. Harm was right, it was Dalton and all he stood for. I dont think Mac even acknowledged to herself how she felt about Harm, not in the real sense, I dont think she expected to feel as she did when she left him and JAG.

4)I dont think either of them could begrudge her wanting to climb higher in her career. In a way, I think they were both happy for her and they cared enough not to try to manipulate her.(Dalton had no problem with that though...did he?)

5)I think that's when it first hit her that she was walking away from someone she felt a strong connection to. For all she knew, she would never work with him again, or might not ever see him again. That had to be pretty profound. Dalton for all his razzle dazzle, was no Harm, period.

6)I think it was a combination of things, loss of a close partner(they'd been through alot together)jealousy of Daltons status in the civilian world, his Porche the fact that he had Mac in his life..etc. As far as he knew, she was gone from his life, like is other two partners, never to return.

[> Most of this story line was OK, maybe a 4, but the ending was wonderful, so I'll average it out to a 4.5. (inside) -- Deemus, 16:21:50 07/25/08 Fri

I liked the personal-lives touch that we got from Bud and Harriet, even though I'm sure many viewers were, as I was, gritting teeth and wishing we could see Harm and Mac with more out-of-office stuff!
(2) I noticed that pretty face line, and shuddered. I can only assume that Mac was entranced by the idea of taking part in important cases. I didn't get the feeling she wanted wealth or fame, just the chance to have an impact on meaningful law decisions.
(3) I don't think she was running away from Harm, but maybe she wanted to join Dalton's world a bit.
(4) I can't picture either AJ or Harm trying to talk Mac out of leaving. They both seemed to accept that she wanted something different, and they respected her wishes.
(5) I loved this final scene, but it was bittersweet. I think Mac did have some doubts, and her line about Tomcats hinted to me that she was comparing Dalton to Harm, and not necessarily to Dalton's advantage. I'm not sure she saw Harm as someone obtainable at this point, even though I think she did have romantic feelings that she kept--or tried to keep--hidden.
(6) All of the above, although I'm not sure he recognized the romantic love aspect of it. Yes, he was jealous, sad, regretful, etc.

Yes, I liked Randolph Mantooth too. I loved Emergency! I remember watching with DH during our early years, and saying, "It's 8:40, so this must be the big rescue!"

[> I'll give it a 4. I hate change and saying good-bye, even though I know how it all turns out. (inside) -- Carrotts, wishing she was off to Chicago, 16:35:31 07/25/08 Fri

1) (cont.) I didn't mind Harriett coming to JAG, but I did grow weary of their home life. I didn't care one fig bout Harriett's broken fridge till Harm had to come try and fix it. Wedding jitters were okay because Mac was the calming agent. Never needed to see Bud ready to fo-dee-oh-do after he lost the leg. Ever. So I guess I didn't care about their home life unless Harm or Mac were involved.

2) She lived in a man's world and as what's her name, let's call her RIO girl, said once: you can't be a wuss and freak out about every little thing (or something to that effect LOL). Ain't saying it's right, but the line you draw has to be a bit farther to the left than that relatively benign comment. okay, at least in my world. Frankly, that's why I didn't understand her freaking out at Brumby's garden party thing. She knew how to handle those pups. I've had to call in the big guns only once, but I couldn't count the times I would have had to if comments like that got to me. And I work with pretty tame fellas compared to Navy and Marine jocks.

3) She was going to work on a case that was going before the Supreme Court, working closely with boyfriend(?), and getting big bucks. Who wouldn't be seduced by that? Okay, maybe not the working with/for the boyfriend part. Her mistake was in knowing what exactly her role would be. She was used to being in the thick of it, where all the action was. If they had of thrown her in the mix, I think she would have stayed. And going back to #2, I think after a few weeks of being a briefcase carrier THEN the pretty face comment would get to me. Context.

4)Nah, it would have been wrong to try and hold her back on AJ's side, and what could Harm have said? "Don't stretch yourself because I like you here?"

5)I think she was letting him know that she remembered their earlier conversation on the subject when she teased him, and now the teasing was over because this was good-bye. And she wanted him to know that he was still special to her, even though she was leaving. Gosh, I hate good-byes and endings.

6) Gosh, I hate good-byes. I think he was sad. They were partners and friends. Things weren't ever going to be the same again. Gosh, I hate good-byes. Crap.

[> I voted so I've got to put my two cents worth in this week.....inside, because I always go over..... -- fananicfan, 09:41:38 07/26/08 Sat

1) 4 to 4.5, it was good, but sad that Mac was leaving. I didn't mind that Harriet was around, but as someone else said, there came a point when they were there too much of the time. I also agree Bud and Harriet were suppose to be the opposite side of Harm and Mac - those who could admit how they felt and make a two military careeer marriage work.

2) I think Mac saw the comment as an older gentlemen trying to give her a compliment. SOME older men, especially one's in high places don't seem to know women have the right to vote - I've worked with some of them. It was an older generations way of complimenting a woman so I think she took his comment as such. When she started working there, if he as a senior partner had started coming around and trying to peak down her blouse or something, I think Mac would've kicked his six into next week.

3) I think Mac was drawn to the ideal of what such a job and Dalton could bring. Dalton wanted for nothing financially it would seem. And with financial freedom she'd think like many of us, life would be easier. I don't think it was about the actual dollar amount, but the ideal of financial freedom. I hope that makes sense to someone other than me.

To try to be clear: I'm sure that as a little girl Mac thought her mother should've taken her with her when she left (I have to agree that she should've too, but that's a different discussion). As a woman who left a bad marriage (though we didn't know about it yet) and who'd been taking care of herself for awhile, Mac, the woman, would have considered the financial side of the issue. A well paying job, in her mind, would mean that she'd never have to "put up" with some bozo. Since we see Mac as a take charge Marine, I think it's hard for us to see the "damaged child" that she grew from and some of her decisions - in her personal life - were made by what she'd lived through and had seen.

Dalton was charming and handsome - a prince so to speak - so a life with him or at minimum in that world would be an ideal - a fairy tale life. And to her it offered her, her three "must haves" - great career, good man, and the ability to buy a lot of shoes! LOL

4) I agree with those who've said that it wasn't the Admiral or Harm's place to try to get her to stay it was her life. Though they did in their own way, try to convey that they weren't happy about her leaving. "Do you know why the Admiral is mad at me?" and Harm's reponse "Same reason we all are."

5) I think the scene with Randolf Mantooth - yes, I too am old enough to remember Emergency - where Harm hit Palmer and his character said, "and Marines have the bad reputation" or words to that effect was a great scene in the episode.

Of course, no scene could compare to the goodbye one at the end. I think in that moment for Mac it finally sunk in that she was leaving Jag behind....and HARM. Before they hug he doesn't say call me and we'll have lunch on your expense account or something- he jokes that they might be facing off in court again soon. It wasn't a promising we'll keep in touch kind of comment so I think it really hit her that it was one life or the other...no mixing and matching. And in that particular moment, "it's no tomcat" she was reflecting the direct comparision between Harm and Dalton that was going through her mind at that moment.

I think she felt close to Harm. They'd worked through a lot together, but I don't think she was searching for any big declaration of anything at this point. She felt close to Harm and for her a close emotional relationship or bond with a man without a physical side to it probably felt strange to her based on what we know of her past, so I think it was hard for her to leave that behind. Harm was a different kind of man than she was use to being around. She was use to men like Dalton, who found her attractive and let her know he wanted her. I think she realized that aspect of it or could finally put her figure on what it was that was different about the two men in that moment.

6) I think Harm was suffering from a lot of things loss, worry and jealousy among them. They hadn't been partners long, but they were close...I think even Harm knew at this point that he felt closer to Mac than his previous partners.

I think for Harm watching Mac, who looked like Diane, leave him was like losing Diane and Mac. At this point, we didn't know, but Harm was keeping tabs on the usual suspects in Diane's murder....Death Watch is later in this season, so Diane was still very much alive for Harm.

I think Harm was worried about Mac's decision to go off into the sunset so to speak with Dalton. I don't think Harm trusted Dalton. I think it was a guy thing. I know my dad use to shake someone's hand or look a man in the eye sometimes that the guy was no good. And he was right most of the time. I think Harm had that sense of you're not the right man for her because you're a jerk, but he didn't have any concrete reasons for it because it was just his guy to guy senses at work.

I'm sure their was jealousy also because in "Father's Day", a few episodes later when we have the 'olive scene' he admits to it. He says that if he were a civilian lawyer, he'd be Dalton.

I don't think it was just Dalton's career he was jealous over. I think that he had Mac was involved in that too, but I don't think he thought his feelings were about Mac...I think he still saw her at least some of the time at this point as Diane and for him that was a separate issue that he wasn't willing to discuss.

This is why I have to go inside. I can write a short scene, but I can't seem to keep my answers on EOTW short. I'll work on it. Thanks for letting me play this week.

[> Yeah - this was a gooder - I'll give it a 4.5. I haven't read the other comments yet so forgive me if I'm repeating here. 1) Ummm... I have to go out on a limb on this one and say NO!!! NO, no, no, no! LOL I really don't think the Bud/Harriett thing enhanced the show at all (sadly). In fact, I think it hurt it (inside). -- Gibson, 16:12:20 07/26/08 Sat

I think it unfortunately took away alot of credibility from the show and people who might have otherwised enjoyed the serious, court-room/military drama, may have tuned in only to catch a "Bud/Harriett shlocky moment" and never tuned in again b/c they thought that's what the show was like. I don't mean to be too harsh on the actors - I thought PL was brilliant before he was with Harriet (and he had his moments after they were together too), and I think KT is great - just them together were very... irritating and gave the show a whole "Little House on the Prairie" feel during their "moments" that really didn't fit in with the rest of the show. Personally I feel that DPB used B&H as another excuse to stick it to the fans - I always got the feeling that he was thinking "You want romance - here's romance - don't say I never gave you nothin'!" And then gave us a caricature of romance done to a the sickening, enth degree - just to be a complete ass. I also thought he used the vehicle of Harriet to once again portray his attitude toward women. I hated the way he made Harriet so controlling over Bud in a very, innocent, pretending to let Bud come to his own decision but it was really what she wanted, kinda way.
But of course... that's just my opinion! LOL

2)Hmmm... well, that's a tough one. Again, I know some people may disagree with me here, but speaking as a female who works in a very male dominant workplace, I have to once again quote The West Wing. I think the character of Ainsley Hayes summed it up very well when Sam was accused by another staffer of demeaning Ainsley when he commented that she "could make a good dog break his leash." (b/c she was all dressed up nice). The staffer couldn't believe that Ainsley wasn't offended by this comment, saying "I'm surprised you would let your sexuality diminish your power." To which Ainsley replies "I like it when the guys tease me. It's an inadvertent show of respect that I'm on the team and I don't mind it when it gets sexual. And you know why? I like sex.... I don't think that whatever sexuality I may have diminishes my power. I think it enhances it". LOL - I always loved that line. I think there's a fine line with sexual comments - you have to look at the context of who's saying it and why. If the comment was meant to demean you, then yes - be offended. But if the comment was only meant in fun, or a guy's way of letting you know he thinks you're sexy, then there's no harm in that at all - in fact, sometimes it's just meant to be a compliment. That being said though - I can't remember the exact context of this comment - I'd have to see it again to make sure, but if Mac wasn't offended, that was probably the reason. She's been in a military environment for so long, harmless sexual comments probably didn't phase her one bit anymore.

3)I think it was a bit of a combo of both. I think she was in part running from her feelings from Harm b/c she felt they weren't mutual and as well, she was a little overwhelmed at Dalton's attention and all the glamour of the 'rich world' that he represented. Since Mac came up from being poor, she was probably at least a little tempted by the idea of being rich. It was only when Dalton proved to be the kind of man he was, and the world of the rich law firm not only didn't have the excitement, but the moral fibre that she had brought herself up to, did she realize she had made a mistake and that she belonged in a place where she was serving a higher purpose.

4) I think AJ tried as much as he would allow himself to talk her out of it, but as a CO he probably didn't believe that he should be coercing anyone to stay under his command. I think he was also a little hurt by her decision and was pissed at her for leaving. And Harm, well a little of the same for him too, but I think the main reason he didn't try to convince her to stay was the same as why he never tried to convince her to do anything - he thought that she knew her own mind and should make her own decisions about her life.

5) Oh definitely. I think if Harm had ever expressed romantic feelings for Mac at anytime in the early seasons, she would have dropped everything for him in a minute. I think that she was secretly hoping he would beg her to stay.

6)I think he was having trouble sorting out his feelings. I think he was really reluctant to get into a relationship with Mac at this point in time (for whatever reason), but I believe at that particular moment, he was thinking that he was really going to regret that decision!

LOL - I loved EMERGENCY too!!! "burr-buh-beee. Squad 51, Squad 51..." ;0)

1) I don't remember enough to give it a rating, but I seem to remember that I liked this one for the most part. Maybe a 4 or so? I liked Bud and Harriet as they interacted with Harm and Mac, but I thought we saw too much mushy stuff between just the two of them. The mushy stuff should have been between Harm and Mac!

2) I agree with a lot of what's already been said about this one. I've spent a lot of time around my grandparents' friends (albeit not in a work environment), and many of them have spoken to me that way, but I never thought anything about it other than being flattered. If an older gentleman said something like that with no obvious intention to offend or harass, I would just chalk it up to him being old fashioned and being raised in a different generation. I think Mac had learned to pick her battles and that one wasn't worth fighting.

3) I love what fananicfan said for this one: "It offered her, her three "must haves" - great career, good man, and the ability to buy a lot of shoes!" So true! I certainly understand her reasoning. She had a handsome, intelligent boyfriend, who was offering her the chance to not only make tons of money, but to be involved in major cases and really make a difference. And she had no way of knowing if her feelings for Harm were mutual. It almost seems like a no-brainer. It's ironic that once she got there, she realized that JAG was the place she needed to be to truly make a difference.

4) I think AJ felt his hands were tied. It was her decision to make, not his. I think Harm felt the same way too. But if he had made a move romantically for Mac, I think she would have stayed, despite all the compelling reasons to leave. Why settle for a good man, when you can have a great one?

5) Yeah, I think she wanted Harm to give her a reason to stay. I think she was realizing exactly what she was losing. She was going to miss her old life and she knew her relationship with Harm would never be the same.

6) I think Harm was experiencing everything you said. He, like Mac, was just realizing how things were really going to change. And yes, he was jealous of Dalton. He even admitted it in a later ep. Not only was Dalton rich and powerful, he was taking away his best friend and partner and something more. I believe Harm already knew at this point that Mac meant more to him than his previous partners ever did. I think someone else already said that, so I'm just agreeing. LOL

[> I rate this a 4.2 - I liked the action and drama, and the whole UFO thing was great. I actually liked Harriet joining the office. I don't think there was too much emphasis, but would have liked to have seen more of Harm and Mac outside of work. -- Katiegirl, 21:13:38 07/26/08 Sat

I think she normally would have been, but she was still overwhelmed about what was happening with the job proposal.

I think it was a bit of all of those. She wanted to see if she would enjoy the other side of life. Turns out she was wrong!!!!

I think AJ did the right thing, he would have just pushed her away faster if he tried anything more overt. As for Harm, c'mon, we all know that he really wanted to, he was just to scared.

Again I think a lot was said with those words. It's all that cryptic speak that they used over the years. To me, it was yeah, I know, but he's not you, and I don't know if I'm really ready to leave now.

I think he was feeling grief - we all grieve over things in life, this was Harm's grief, at losing Mac, at not being able to express himself, and at the lost opportunities.

"And we're the ones with the bad name." Or words to that effect. I love that scene, and Harm in any t-shirt is hot!!! HOT, I tell you.
