Subject: Rerun Episode of the Week – Washington Holiday

With Voy going Oy for most of last week, we didn't get to have the EOTW voting. Rather than skipping the week, I thought we'd have a rerun EOTW from Season 2, since we have already discussed all of that season anyway. Later this week we'll have the vote for next week's EOTW. So this week our EOTW is Season 2’s "Washington Holiday”, with an incredibly sexy Harm in peanut butters, dress whites & mess/dinner dress, as well as very tight jeans. Also this episode has some great, memorable lines.

In this episode, Harm escorts a rambunctious Romanian princess around Washington, whose life has been threatened if her father, the king, petitions for his country to join NATO. Meanwhile Bud has his first date with Harriet Sims.

1) On a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 being great, how would you rate this episode and why?
2) Was Harm attracted to the princess? Was she just, as he tells her, an "assignment”? Would their relationship have been different if she had been more mature?
3) Do you think Harm did see the princess once she returned home? If so, how would they have interacted?
4) In this episode, Mac displays sensitivity to Bud & Harriet’s romance and concocts a way to get them back together. Do you see Mac as a romantic at heart? Was that one of the problems between Mac and Harm – she was a romantic and he wasn’t? Or is that true?
5) "Mac, I don’t think of you as a sister.” So, at that point in their relationship, how DID Harm think of her?
6) Did Harm escort Mac to the ball? Or did they each come without dates to such a formal affair? Bud worries about having a date for the ball, yet we don’t see any dates for Harm or Mac.

Someone asked if we could mention scenes that USA Network cuts. In this episode, one scene that is usually cut is of Mac teaching Bud to dance. Also the scene in which Harm carries the princess out of the nightclub is sometimes cut.

Please post your thoughts.

Hey Hope, I really miss your screen caps. I also enjoyed your large, crystal-clear pics; they were amazing! I know they must have taken tons of time, and I really appreciate your efforts! You have no idea how many times I go to your website to check out the screen caps, especially when reviewing an episode or writing or story. I'm going to miss not having the rest on your well-organized, easy-to-access site.

You rule!!!!!!!!!!!

[> we were talking about that this weekend life gets busy and we've lost so many of our 'humorous' posters - I don't think most folks realize this board is BLUE because it was started by a group of hillarious women who joked, and played with words and had inuendos flying so no one under 18 was allowed. You'd come on this board and laugh your ars off and spit your soda - Great change of pace from real life - and Jenks - I thought of you this weekend - oh what joys for a CW fan!! lol. -- chris k, 09:17:16 06/30/09 Tue

[> This was a pretty humerous episode on varied storylines, IMO even where he tries not to miscommunicate to Mac. Inside -- Christa, 10:13:20 06/30/09 Tue

1. You have the Princess chasing after Harm,(heck even the assasin was flirting with Harm), Bud learning to dance, Bud and Harriet starting to date, and Harm confused on how to express what he's starting to feel for Mac. Lots of room for laughs in this one!
2. I don't really see Harm attracted to the Princess. She was more like a little sister whom he was to protect. That was his assignment and no I don't seeing them having gotten together if she had been more mature...he was still somewhat "jet jock" and having a woman more powerful than him as a love interest wasn't his style. She wouldn't have been an equal and that was something that was important to him.
3. Nope. I don't see him seeing her after the assignment was over, other than at an official function when he was given the assignment at the end of the episode.
4. I think Mac was somewhat of a romantic. She had just been very unlucky in love and was beginning to believe that she wasn't worthy of being loved like she thought two people in love should be, hence she could play matchmaker for Bud and Harriet and see the kind of love that she could only dream about. The problem with Harm and Mac came from all the emotional baggage that they carried. They needed time to allow the baggage to fall off and their very special love to blossom. They were both afraid of losing the other one and I think deep down knew that what they had was a once in a lifetime love.
5. Harm was beginning to sort out his feelings for Mac and beginning to realize that she was someone very special. Hence the attempt at keeping her from misunderstanding how he viewed her. Who knew that it would take them 9 years to get it right!
6. I've always thought that they came together to the ball.
This was a great review episode as it gave us jumping off points for further storylines. Looking forward to seeing which one we review next!

[> I love Washington Holiday, so I think it's a 5. 2. He was attracted, but she was his "job" so that uber sense of professionalism kicks in here (not unlike his feelings about Mac). 3. No. That's where the age thing kicks in. She was too young and he was too wrapped up in his job. Furthermore, Harm would see no value in being a "prince consort". I don't see that in Harm's personality, to be a "kept man". 4. Mac and Harm both suffered from idealism/romanticism/ambition, albeit at different times about different things. I wouldn't call one a romantic over the other. -- TH, 11:09:51 06/30/09 Tue

5. Don't shoot, but I think Harm viewed her as his partner and best friend. I think he was attracted to her, but he continued to stifle it because he didn't understand how he could make it work.

6. I think they both went stag because unconsciously, they knew they had each other, and professionally, they were working.

[> This is a five. I loved Harm in this, I loved the reference to "An Officer and a Gentleman" when Harm picked the princess up and carried her out of the nightclub and to her limo. I think Harm was attracted to her, in a way, but she was an assignment and he was an honorable guy and didnt let her 'go there'. INSIDE: -- mkim, 16:19:35 06/30/09 Tue

3)No, I dont think he saw her. It was a nice dream, but not realistic and I think they both knew it when they said it.

4)I think Mac was a romantic at heart, back then, but a lot of bad things happned to her in the following years that made her romantic heart retreat behind a big protective wall.

5)He was attracted and intrigued with Mac, but it was early on and after all...his big excuse. "We work together.' always came up.

6)I think they came without dates. Harm was 'working' and Mac didnt necessarily want a date, or I imagine she would have had one.

[> Another one of my top 5 eps. I rank it a "5", and loved the sizzle between Harm and Alexi. Too bad we never saw the "follow up" with Harm leading the delegation of "aid" ships to Romania, but I have a few ideas of how that might have turned out! -- The Chief (the HB's only Harm/Alexi Shipper), 16:09:12 07/01/09 Wed

[> I rate it a 4, as it was entertaining & fun, just not enough Harm & Mac working together. (smile) -- doc, 16:32:53 07/01/09 Wed

On a purely superficial basis, I’m sure Harm was attracted to the Princess. She was a cute, feisty imp, but much too young & immature for Harm. Her shenanigans would have worn thin in a very short while. I can’t see the 2 of them EVER being in a serious relationship or even a fling, as she was much too young. The most important aspect to Harm was that she was a case & a person he needed to protect.

No, I don’t think they ever saw each other again.

Yes, I think Mac was a romantic at heart, but I think her losses in the last 2 seasons of JAG finally took their toll on her romantic side. She ended up needing to protect her heart from anymore hurt or abandonment. I think there were “brief” glimpses of Harm’s romantic side, but they were few & fleeting. Now, once H&M got married after FW&FS, I can see Harm letting his romantic side come out more often with Mac.

I don’t think Harm saw Mac as his sister, but at this point I think he viewed her more as a friend. This episode occurred mid season-2, after “Full Engagement.” I suspect Harm was attracted to Mac, because she was definitely beautiful, but I don’t think he wanted or was ready to “go there” with her yet. Those “deeper feelings” developed later in their relationship for Harm than they did for Mac.

It seemed as if they both came stag, or perhaps agreed for expediency to come together. They were both on assignment, so I can’t see either of them wanting to bother with entertaining a date.

[> I meant to post this sooner, but I've had a lot of distractions this week. I give this one a 5. It's one of my favorites. It represents all the best things about JAG: drama, action, humor, romance, etc. Inside -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 13:26:15 07/03/09 Fri

2) I think he found her attractive, he's a guy after all. LOL But I don't think he was seriously interested in her. She was too young, too "out there", and too much of an assignment like he said. He needed someone a little more grounded and mature that could truly be an equal. Someone like...Mac.

3) I don't think there was much future interaction. He probably still treated her like an assignment.

4) I think Mac was a romantic that wanted to believe in fairy tale endings. I think her home life probably caused her to escape to fantasyland a lot. As she got older, alcohol replaced that, but I think the romantic in her still yearned for the happily ever after ending. That's why she stuck it out with Mic, she desperately wanted to believe it could work.

5) I think he thought of her as a best friend and maybe something more. He just wasn't ready to admit to himself (or anyone else) how much more because it scared him.

6) I think they were too busy working to worry about dates. They might have some together for convenience sake, or they might have come alone. I could see either happening.

Thanks again to Araninda for keeping these going. It really helps to keep the board alive, especially now!

[> I'm just back in town, so I'm late with this. This one is pretty good, so I'll give it a 4.5. It's fun, although bloody at the end--never one of my favorite plot devices--and not very believable. (inside) -- Deemus, 16:39:24 07/06/09 Mon

Was Harm really attracted to the princess? Not in my opinion, other than the superficial admiration of a healthy man for an attractive young woman. She was simply a kid, to his point of view. I think that was probably easier to tell her than saying she was too young for him. I doubt he saw her again, and if he did, I doubt he would have felt any different.

I think Mac swung back and forth between being a romantic, and decided that "all that stuff" was just imaginary. She was sensitive to others, and wanted to help, but she seemed to think that it wasn't in the cards for her, since Harm was the standard to which she held other men, and Harm didn't seem to be interested. I always assumed that Harm and Mac came together, but not in a dating sense, since they were both on duty (at least, that's what I gathered from the plot line). I don't think Harm thought of her as a sister, but he didn't quite know what to think of her. A colleague, a friend, but much more than either of those. As we know, it took him another seven or eight years to decide what it was!
