Subject: Harm as a Father

This weekend is Father's Day here in the U.S. and in a number of other countries as well. So let's discuss Harm and fatherhood. Yes, he was Mattie's guardian, but she was already a teenager when they met. What kind of father would Harm be with his own child? Would he be overprotective or indulgent? Would he be a strict disciplinarian? Would he be highly involved in his child's life or an absentee father? Would he fit more of the traditional father role or would he share child care tasks with his wife (changing diapers, bathing the child, toilet training, etc.)? As the child grows and matures into teens and adulthood, would a "generation gap" occur between Harm and the child?

There are lots of fanfics about Harm and fatherhood. What is one thing about Harm and fatherhood that you would like to read in a fanfic but never have or that you have read that seems out of character?

[> I'm pretty sure Harm would probably try to be all the wonderful things that his father was to him, as best as he can remember from being 6 and not seeing him too often. I also think, after all his life-experiences, that he has a list of "dos and don'ts" in his head. "Dos" from guys like AJ and Bud, "don'ts" from Big Bud and Jen Coates' dad. Etc. Also, I think it would probably bring out his silly side a lot more and soften him up emotionally. And he would not shy from all the various baby-chores. -- The Chief (not to mention, supporting his child in whatever said child would enjoy - sports, arts, etc - and would be lovingly strict about decorum and manners., 19:08:29 06/14/12 Thu

[> [> I totally agree with The Chief, especially about the decorum and manners bit - he'd want to raise them to be good to people. I think he would be an over-achieving (but loving) dad, in that he would do all he could to make sure his children always had that 'father presence' in their lives that he missed so much after his dad's plane went down. And because of his little obsessive streak, I think he would probably go overboard sometimes in wanting to be 'super dad'. -- Dee, 08:25:52 06/15/12 Fri

[> it would probably be much like when he was with Josh in season three - he'd be one of those parents who explained everything to their child from birth- lol- And I fear - his childish side would have would have put him at odds with his son's mother whenever he didn't agree with her - he'd do what he always did - bypass the rules. -- chris k, 00:02:15 06/15/12 Fri

[> [> [> ESPECIALLY in regards to a son. A daughter, on the other hand, he might just defer to mom on those issues. Except when it comes to boys, then he'd be super-over-protective! LOL -- The Chief, 12:41:49 06/15/12 Fri

[> I agree with the above. I think Mac would have her hands full Harm cutting up with the kids. with -- Cathy F. waving at Jenks, 11:59:43 06/15/12 Fri

[> In my mind, Harm would've been an attentive and loving Dad -- quite firm and protective, but a big old softy -- especially doting with a daughter. Gosh, as if he isn't hunky enough (inside)-- -- mj, 15:16:45 06/15/12 Fri

I would've absoluely melted seeing Harm as a loyal, strong family man! I think he would've stepped up to the plate of 'being there' for his children as much as possible as his way of working through how he never had his own Dad around for most of his life. Mac and he would've been quite consistent in their EVENTUAL approach to parenting -- not after a few stirring 'discussions' and compromises on 'dealbreakers' on many many issues! They would've always ended with civil handshakes and vigorous other signs of agreement! lol!

[> Agree with all of the above comments. And, I would have loved to have seen 'Daddy Harm' in action! Also, though I don't think Harm would admit to it, but Frank, AJ and Tom had quite a bit of influence in his life -- showed Harm how a loving Dad acts. -- carramor - Am sooo tired not sure that made any sense at all -- closing and moving next Wednesday so will be off the board for days, weeks...????, 21:39:04 06/15/12 Fri

[> There have been great answers to this one. I think we saw the young father with Harm and Josh and then the more mature father with Mattie. I think we would see a combination with he and Mac's kids. -- Christa, 23:25:56 06/17/12 Sun

[> I think it depends on whether or not his baby was born when Harm was in his 20s or his 40s. He would be a far more cavalier dad in his 20s, willing to be gone away from his child with flying and the Navy, though he would parent the best he could given his job. I don't see that in his 40s. I see him valuing time much more and being more of a hands on parent. The values he taught would be the same but the time spent would be different. -- Theresa, 21:26:32 06/28/12 Thu
