Subject: Sail Back Saturday - Script vs Scene - Adrift

One of my favorites is Adrift. The words come to me and you know the reason, definitely took on a new charged meaning.
Whether it was the intent or not, DJE's delivery of those lines definitely added another dimension to the scene.

Later, watching the episodes leading up to this one and the episodes after this one definitely helped form my view of the character of Mac. The scene in Harm's apt with Renee was also to me definitely not Renee's shining moment either.

It also felt like something was missing in the interactions, and there was more to it. The script was on ebay so I got it. There were many differences, and it filled in some holes. The differences in the scenes between H and M and H and R etc. etc., probably would have altered my view of the characters in the episode, and beyond.

When watching it, I thought given the circumstances Renee would have told Harm that they were engaged. Lo and behold, it was in the script.

From beginning to end, it was an interesting comparison on how the final result was formed.

Adrift - Harm and Renee

It's funny..as an aside.. if you look at Harm's many head injuries throughout the show... he always seems to be cut in the same place...

The comparison text is in the reply post.

SUPER: 2110 ZULU, NORTH OF UNION STATION, WASHINGTON, D.C..

[X]
To establish.

117 INT. HARM'S APARTMENT - LATE AFTERNOON 117

Renee enters, lugging a suitcase, drops it, crosses back to the door, opens it. Harm now enters, using his cane.

RENEE PETERSEN
You all right?

HARM
Yeah. How about you?

RENEE PETERSEN
I 'kept telling myself, better your suitcase than your casket.

She closes the door. Harm crosses to the living area. [X]

RENEE PETERSEN
Do you want something, tea, a sandwich?

HARM
I'm fine.

RENEE PETERSEN
How about some music?

HARM
How about you stop waiting on me and come talk?

He settles into the couch. She crosses to him, sits beside him. He looks at her for a moment.

HARM
You've been great.

Off Renee's look of concern.

HARM
So why do you look less than flattered?

RENEE PETERSEN
You didn't propose to me, you know.

HARM
I know.

RENEE PETERSEN
(caught him)
That's why the look. Of course you know. Even though you couldn't remember doing it, you thought, this is not a woman I would marry.

HARM
Renee....

She stands, thinks about what she just said.

RENEE PETERSEN
I hate myself when I talk like this.
(beat)
Harm, I'm pushing you, and it frightens me. [X]

HARM
Then, why are you doing it?

RENEE PETERSEN
Because I'm afraid...not to.

HARM
Tell me this isn't about Mac.

Renee's eyes cannot tell a lie.

HARM
(weary)
I don't understand why we keep getting back to her.

RENEE PETERSEN
Because we can't get past her. Planes go down, weddings get cancelled, girlfriends are forgotten.

HARM
I remember my girlfriend... especially the way she used to loosen me up.

RENEE PETERSEN
(softening)
You do?

HARM
So I'm sure you can understand my disappointment at feeling so tense right now.

Guilt washes over her face.

RENEE PETERSEN
Let me make you a sandwich. She crosses into the kitchen.

HARM
I don't want a sandwich. I want some peace.

She stops.

HARM
For the afternoon.

She gets it, is crushed.

RENEE PETERSEN
Okay.

HARM
I'm not mad at you. I just don't want to have to talk about this right now.

RENEE PETERSEN

We're done talking.

•.
HARM
No, I mean, looking in your face and knowing what you're thinking.
Let's table it, and give each other a break for the day, okay?

Now she's disappointed.

RENEE PETERSEN
Sure.

Renee starts to exit.

HARM
Renee.

She looks back at him.

HARM
(sincerely) [X]
Thanks.

She musters a weak smile, exits.

[> [> [> I think it's different (inside) -- Alicia, 20:52:40 07/13/14 Sun

The clip that goes with this verbage is in the original post.

To me it viewing it leaves a different feeling than reading it, as there are differences and omissions--especially in the Renee telling him he proposed and the rest of the crew including Mac hearing him asking her about it.

I think part of it, is everything in the script would have run over the time alloted... Harm's scenes in the water were longer and more dramatic.. He spoke alot more. Mac's finding him was much more dramatic than a look here and pointing to a map.

The above scene as written was much longer. Captain Ingles was more emotional. Bud's behavior was explained. Tiner had more lines.... The come to me scene was longer. etc..etc..etc...

It filled in some holes, yet at the same time seemed to be going in a different direction. I like them both, as written and as shown..but they lead me to a different place in the end.

SUPER: 0246 ZULU , DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT , WASHINGTON ,

HARM'S APARTMENT-NIGHT 126 The phone RINGS . Harm answers .

HARM
Hello .

INTERCUT WITH 127 INT . INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE TERMINAL -NIGHT

Mac, on her cell phone, is on the other end. Her eyes are filled with tears .

MAC
He's gone.

HARM
{disappointed) What a fool.

MAC
He wouldn't even speak to me.

HARM
I stand corrected. He's a coward.

MAC
The look in his eyes ....

HARM
Mac, don't make this your fault. Brumby's always acted impulsively. It was only a matter of time .

MAC
What are you saying

HARM
I know this isn't going to make it hurt any less, but better now than six months into the marriage.

MAC
(stiffening) You've always thought this?

HARM
(backing off) Well, I. ...

MAC
Why didn't you tell me?

HARM
Because you wouldn't have believed it coming from me.

MAC
(at sea) I'm hanging up now.

HARM
Wait a minute . Where are you going?
MAC

I don't know .

Harm considers what Skates told him about getting another chance and grabbing hold of what's really important.

HARM
Come to me.

MAC
Why?

HARM

So we can talk.

MAC
We already talked.

HARM
Mac, don't argue.

MAC
I want a better reason.

HARM
(with meaning ) You know the reason.

This calms her.

HARM
Mac?

MAC
I'm here .

HARM
I 'll be waiting.

END INTERCUT Mac presses the END button on her phone, stands there for a moment, searching for a clue as to what just happened.

[> In the scrlpt it didnt seem to include how much pain Harm was in. That was the reason I liked Renee less in this scene. It irritated me that she didnt give him time to settle in, catch his breath. The script looked as if he was just stringing her along, whch I never thought was fair. -- mkim, 09:32:43 07/13/14 Sun

[> Yes.. that was my big issue with Renee in the scene..(inside) -- Alicia, 11:42:27 07/13/14 Sun

The poor guy almost died..is bruised and battered..and the minute he sits down she pounces. And then, it's Mac's turn for him to pick up her pieces.

In the script, there was a note somewhere connected to one of their scenes that Harm and Renee realize he loves Mac more than Renee.

What also changed was the Brumby can't get past them scene. As written, Harm more or less pushes Mac out the door to go to him and marry him--which definitely had a different vibe.

I really didn't find Mac a sympathetic character as shown.
On the screen she chose to go after Mic, choosing him. Then suddenly as it progressed, it was all Harm's fault.
I would have viewed her more sympathetically with him pushing her to Mic.

Its amazing what a few snips here and there can do to the overall meaning.
