Author: Cece
Subject: Starting a few days ago, there has been an ongoing discussion on the Entertainment Board, primariily about Bones.

The discussion inevitably moved to JAG and how it compared and contrasted with other shows of a similar nature. I posted my response, and I decided that I'd really like to post that response here on the main board. I hope that's okay with you all. I'm giving it a new title: What JAG meant to me. I'll post it as a response to thie post.

[> What JAG meant to me: ( with corrections and additions.) (Inside) -- Cece, 17:40:59 07/13/14 Sun

It's sometimes hard to understand why some shows get to us in that special way. JAG meant so much to me for all its faults and the disgusting behaviour of TPTB.

It wastn't just because Harm was played by such a gorgeous actor. I was a huge fan of Knott's Landing and watched ever ep, but I can't remember DJE for the life of me.

A lot had to do with Harm as the quintessential hero, and how damn good he looked in every type of naval uniform. And how good he looked in a tomcat, or in court.

But good looks alone don't do it for me, and there certainly have been better written romances. For example, I was CRAZY about Moonlighting and watched the scene when David and Maddie finally got together, 40 plus times in a row. I was obsessed, and terribly upset that the show was completely ruined by the time it got cancelled. I loved it way more than I loved JAG.

So, why did I spend the better part of 10 years on JAG? It was a combination of things, an aligning of the stars so to speak. At the beginning I watched it off and on with my husband and might have dropped it after S7. But a funny thing happened on the way to Lifeline in S6. I found Maeve's, and some of the funniest women I've ever met. And a few months later, 9/11 happened and our communities were set. And then we opened the HarmyBoard, (Nov. 17th 2001), and the rest is history.

JAG became much more than a tv show with a hot star. It became STEMMING, and GLOODLE Aawards and Survivor, and IMing, and various Tarts, and cartoons, and collages, and videos, and fanfic, and fights, and fanfests, and friendships, and babies born and even friends dying. It became deep and long winded discussions, and petty jealousies, and spoilers, and nasty people from other boards who didn't like us. It was love and hate, and anger and kindness, and most of all,it was lots of laughter. It became fun. It became so much to so many, and to this day, the HB is still here with old and new alike. All still welcome; all still special in their own way.

I know there are and will be far better shows, better romances, better story arcs, better characters, better heroes and heroines, and maybe even better looking actors. But for me, there will never be another JAG. It became my community, my own love affair, my social life, and my online family. It became real people who cared, and as they used to sing in Cheers, it became a place "where everybody knows your name." It became an exciting voyage to who knows were, but I'll never forget the wonderful people I have met along the way.

[> [> As an outsider looking in.. what you've conveyed, seems to be at the heart of the phenomena known as JAG (inside) -- Alicia, 23:16:59 07/14/14 Mon

It's funny. After discovering this show so many years after it was on and getting hooked, it was a bit of a mystery to me at the time the why. I came to figure that out, I think lol.

When I got to the latter part of S8, and rode off the cliff with it, I was curious as to why. Something had to have happened. So I went traveling through the net, as google is my friend.

It was through that reading, that I was able to see the other part of it. The fandom that was and on so many levels still is, and everything that went with it, everything that made it a phenomena. That is as much of the JAG story as any thing else.

I have to say looking at posts on this this board where I could.. oh my goodness.. some so dang funny. The humor priceless. Of course now I know the word shipper has nothing to do with the show being about the Navy :-).

And having a character like Harm, and an actor who seemed born to play the part helps too.

[> [> [> LOL, when I first discovered the Harmyboard I thought a shipper was a new nautical term too. But seriously, the Harm and Mac thing for me, from season 2 to 7 especially, were those long intense looks between the two of them...they read each others faces and many times, IMHO, there were lots and lots of sparks. I'd just never seen anything that powerful before. Moonlightings' Dave and Maddie were a close second, but that was only because the writers strike screwed up the last season of the show so badly. -- mkim I have alot of history with the Navy and the show began the same year my DH retired, so it was HOME, 14:08:10 07/15/14 Tue

Got drawn in and enjoyed the show, but once I found Maeve's site a whole new world opened up to me. The laughter, the silliness, the endless speculation re character & plot, then getting to know individual voices on the board was a unique adventure for me. When I went JAG Fanfest, I met marvelous women. Over the years many of them have become treasured friends. [> [> Why I love JAG -- TH, 22:28:16 07/16/14 Wed

I fell in love with the character of Harmon Rabb, Jr.I know he was not perfect, but that was part of his charm. I largely felt the same way about AJ's character. They were idealized, I suppose, manly men who could quote Jane Austen or who appreciated fine food. For those reasons, I appreciate TPTB, specifically DPB. He drew his characters well; the fact that many of his characters from various series remain interesting bears this out. It's too bad that the original writers all didn't stay to see the series through and to maintain the best years of writing, but I still enjoy most episodes, although some of the later seasons episodes bother me - mostly because they don't seem to be true to JAG. Obviously, the Harmy Board made sharing the love much more interesting, and the women here have entertained me for years!

[> [> Well, I go away for a week or so and come back to not one, but TWO big ol' posts based on my little query about "Bones"! LOL (I'm almost thru Season 8 now, which is the last one on NetFlix and then I will be at a loss until they add more, but I digress....) INSIDE I suppose.... -- The Chief (Harm First, Harm Always), 00:06:59 07/19/14 Sat

The online community for JAG thru the message boards was really what made the show "interactive" for me as we discussed everything from Mac's latest hairstyle to the minutae of the UCMJ (can you say "Posse Comitatus"?). The jokes and stories and laughter and even the drama among the posters was absorbing. I never went to a fan fest, and only met up with a few people I had only met online. But the online interactions were so much fun, and I had never watched a tv show with a more observant eye, looking for all the details in order to fully participate in the discussions on the board later.

I never got into Moonlighting, and didn't watch a lot of tv and still don't. My attraction to JAG was Harm. I loved all the characters and the stories (thru S6-ish), but I Loved Harm the best. I gave up on the 'ship at the beginning of S5 when he returned from the Patrick Henry and Mac acted like she couldn't have cared a bit about him. I still followed the gyrations of the shipper journey, but from a non-shipper perspective. It was certainly a lot less stressful. ;-)

For me, everything about JAG went back to Harm - and still does. He is the kind of idealized hero women dream about but few ever catch. And the fact that he didn't get together with Mac until the last 7 minutes left him wide open for the rest of us for 10 years! ;-)

I was thrilled to work with Judi (and later Cece) to develop and kick off the HB back in The Day. We definitely filled a niche!! And it was that niche that made our group special out of all the other fan groups. We had the most fun and didn't take ourselves too seriously, even tho we took our subject matter VERY seriously. Our jokes were the best and our arguments were reasoned and thoughtful. And we are still around, still having fun and still gaining new members!

All because of HARM. Judi's vision for the HB was the right one. Harm will endure as one of the greatest tv heroes of all time, and the HB will go down in fandom history as one of the best from the early days of online fandoms! (Speculation is what we do around here, right?)

Anyway, glad I could get y'all talking and some of our long lost members to pop back in. :-)

You are talking to a date nut here. I found Maeve's March 2001, but didn't start posting right away. I believe that you, judi, and Cher started emailing each other around the time of Mutiny, and along with Brigitte, started the BAs with the Yahoo group opening in June 6, 2001, more than a month before I became a member, and in cyber time, a month is an eternity. I joined the BAs July 17, 2001. (I was number 17 to join.) That's when you and I started chatting. I sent Amelia-Rose a little polar bear, (I believe)some months later, and I sent Crossy's Camryn a bear too at the same time. I remember you giving Crossy advice on how to handle Camryn's first birthday party (very late Dec. 2001). You told her to give her a cake, and let her make a mess....lol.

I didn't start the HB. The original idea was Brigitte's when she visited judi Nov/2001. Judi opened it on Nov. 17, 2001 did with the help of all the BAs, and a number of long time posters followed us. I had no idea how to host a pic, or do a collage, or open boards. I figured all that out later on. Judi and Cher were the first moderators of the HB. I became a banana much later on with Crossy, you, and Dancer following in hot pursuit.

I have a weird exacting memory for when things happened re: BAs etc. If you want a more detailed trip down memory lane, email me and we'll have a good old chinwag.

[> [> [> [> [> [> Well, that clears that up! (inside) -- The Chief, 23:37:01 07/22/14 Tue

Quite impressive with the dates and such!

Judi and I and Cher and a couple others started the BAs (Blue Angles, for those who don't know) as a Yahoo group first (if I recall correctly) and the idea for a separate board for Harm-lovers and those who wanted to go far beyond Maeve's PG rating was first germinated there. I suppose maybe I confused the BAs with the HB, but their formation tracks neck-and-neck!.

Many discussions and many nights on the old Yahoo Instant Messenger, and much hilarity and pathos was generated!

Cece, you and Judi became such close friends, that it was natural for you to be 2nd Banana, which made me 3rd and Dancer 4th. It's an honor I don't take for granted, ever!

As for Crossy, I think she's got that mom thing down pat now. Rarely ever a photo on FB that she doesn't have a drink in her hand, so that's gotta be the secret to her success! LOL ;-)

As Cece and everyone said, it was about all of it -- 1)the gorgeous star, who, of course, I thought was an 'unknown' which, somehow, made him even more attractive to me because I love an unexpected surprise and I thought it was so cool how someone so good and perfect in his role was not already some Clooneyish clone!, 2) the chemistry between Mac and Harm and the dream of their relationship evolving into a lasting love, 3) the stories (well, most of them -- some were ott, 4)feeling a bit of 'home' as I've lived abroad 28+ years.
But, then, I, too discovered the Harmy Board and the laughter and comraderie are such gifts! I also love her how caring, kind, and considerate everyone here is of one another. That seems to be a rarity in this age of 'trolling' and the cowardly 'hate' that people seem to feel they can hurl out to the universe. The phrase 'the pen is mightier than the sword' has taken on all kinds of new dimensions! I REALLY miss JAG and would love to see a sequel set of episodes that fully include many similar stories of what so many of our great fanfics have made 'come true' -- Harm and Mac together with THEIR new generation of JAGsters! Haha! Great thoughts, everyone and great discussion, Cece!

[> I am still amazed that I fell in love with a TV show! I don't even watch much TV, and almost never anything serious. Baseball, football, the local news, an occasional comedy...that's my usual stuff. On the whole, I'd rather read. (inside) -- Deemus, 16:41:08 07/18/14 Fri

But there I was, in the fall of 2001, mesmerized by a show I knew almost nothing about. It was the famous scene from Silent Service (if I remember the episode name correctly), and I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I looked up JAG on the computer, and found Maeve's, and fell further in love. There was only a minor family connection with the service (a son who had recently finished a hitch in the Marines), so I had a lot to learn. The stories were interesting, the people were beliveable and likable (mostly!). I got involved in deep discussions, read bushels of fanfic (even wrote a few for the ficathons), and generally immersed myself in the world of Harm, Mac, and company. It was a terrible loss when it ended, although I can't see where it would have gone from where they left it. I guees it was time for it to go.

I still visit the board every day, and vote faithfully in Hunk of the Month. I have missed JAG tremendously, but what keeps me coming back is the wonderful group of people I've met on this board. It was a great idea to make the board a portal, and I've enjoyed that format. Traffic is slowing down now, nine years (can't believe it!) after the end, and probably it will eventually die out. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, and I hope there will still be a few of us to keep the lights on!

[> [> I hope so too Deemus. Shows come and go, but friends are precious. I'm so happy to see old friends popping in, and I truly thank posters like Araninda, usmgrad, and the newer friends for keeping the HB alive. -- Cece, 21:17:02 07/18/14 Fri

[> Wow, reading all of these memories is so great! I've been around since 2001, not sure when I became a member, but I've loved every minute of this community! My Jaglettes weren't even born yet!! My oldest will be 11 in a couple of months and my youngest just turned 8 last month. -- Angela -- Mommy of 2 JAGlettes, 07:55:51 07/21/14 Mon

[> [> I would hazzard a guess and say that the Star Trek franchise, has an enormous following that's been going on for years. I'm pretty sure that there were Trekkies and Trekkers way before the popularity of the internet. The Xphiles (followers of the X-Files), were a very busy internet group in the early days. I think we are a niche group, compared to other popular shows. -- Cece, 12:00:34 07/21/14 Mon

[> [> [> Jag is special to me too unlike other show plus it helps i love and will always support our troops. DJE and CB portrayed those characters perfectly. The series may be corny but its quite an old fashioned entertainment that is missing in today's TV. Harm and Mac will always be my all time favorite couple. -- Kelly, 12:44:41 07/21/14 Mon

[> [> [> [> Good point. Because JAG was a legal show, it showed the bad with the good in the Navy. But it never disrespected the services or the troops. Instead, it highlighted their humanity, in often inhumane circumstances. -- Cece, 13:39:35 07/21/14 Mon

[> This thread makes me so nostalgic! To think that there are so many of us still posting or lurking. This is amazing. It's almost 13 years. I have to tell y'all, there were times I laughed so hard at some posts I nearly PIMP. But most of all, it's the friendships.. inside... -- love judi waving to everyone, 21:23:17 07/22/14 Tue

When I was going through my divorce, my HB friends were there for me. Some in person but so many others in email and by phone and on the board. I'll never forget that. I could have never survived if not for y'all!

Also, Harm was dishy wasn't he?

[> Communicating from Argentina -- GRa, 11:38:01 07/28/14 Mon

Hi ladies, long long time without seeing you but you are always in my heart. JAG mean a lot to me. I was in other country and I wanted to Know its language, its people, its soul and founded all of them a much more here. I founded friendship and that mean so much to me. And here I am, we came back to Argentina and we are happy despite the problems our country has but I never forget how happy was in USA and this site was a big part of that happiness. Seassons 8 and 9 ruined JAG for me. Seasson 10 couldn't delete that frustration. Other shows came, Castle, Bones and like them so much but none mean what JAG was for me. Big hugs ladies a hope you excuse me for my gramma, it has long time and my English is a little rustic.

[> WOW. I've been away for far too long. I started watching JAG in 1995. I loved it from the very beginning, mostly because it was another way to look at my life. I was a new military wife at the time living in the most isolated post here and pregnant with my first child. It gave me comfort and the realisation that no matter what country, we all go through the same thing. Harm was and sstill is my favourite hero. You girls welcomed me with open arms in 2007 when I needed a release from some stress in my life. Thanks for that.. -- Katiegirl, 04:53:28 08/06/14 Wed
