I think they just came up with stuff as needed and didn't care if it was or wasn't in character- like what lawyer in the real world Anywhere forgets to file for divorce? Seriously? they could have done the line the exact same way - who'd you kill ? My husband - cut to commercial come back - Harm- What? well. My ex husband. And on you go with the same scenario except Mac doesn't look an idiot - sigh
